My SIL one Xmas bought a frozen turkey, took it out of the freezer a few days before to defrost, and left it to thaw in the garage in its plastic bag fully sealed. She opened it to sort it out Xmas Eve and it smelt a bit. Well it would wouldn't it they always do when you open the bag. She just threw it in the bin and bought a fresh one! My Mum was mortified.

yup. Most packaging recommends that you take it out once defrosted then leave it for 30 mins and the smell should go.The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

its a cow's milk mozarella, so i think it is pastuerised. it says best before rather than use by. does that make a difference? I haven't opened the bag yet, as i don't need to use it until tomorrow morning (not a problem if it has gone off, i can use something else, just don't wanna chuck it if its okay, yanno?).

well. mushrooms are stuffed and in the oven. i gingerly opened the mozzarella. it looked okay. it smelled okay. it tasted okay. (i.e. of very little). i put some pesto in the base of the mushroom. topped it with slices of mozarella. topped that with some breadcrumbs, the stalks of the mushrooms finely chopped, finely chopped spring onions, grated parmesan and cheddar, and mixed herbs. piled some of that into the mushroom, then topped the lot with more grated parmesan (i adore parmesan). This will either be absolutely disgusting or totally totally gorgeous. either way, i've taken a before photo, will take an after photo and post it laterfive minutes to go!!

p.s. eaten it. still alive. man. it was absolutely gorgeous. definetly doing it again, and upgrading it to an evening meal i think. it'll be lovely with a good salad. Photos here if anyone wants to see0 -
I never take notice of the dates on veg. All that seems to happen is that they go soft or bendy.
As far as potatoes go You shouldn't eat the green parts as they can do you harm - it doesn't matter if indate or out.
I was amused by the cauliflower story. My gran used to buy couliflowers off the market. They came with lots of green leaves we had one day and the cauli the next.0 -
Kethry, your mushrooms look fab.
I've just been given merry hell because I have thrown out two of the baked potatoes I previously retrieved to bake. DH comments that surely I ended up using more that 50p worth of gas cooking the two that I threw away. I tend to look at the following:
Has it grown legs?
Does the smell rise to great you and make you want to run?
Is it mostly green/red/brown/yellow etc when it should be white?
If I answer no to any of the above then usually it's fine! I tend to ignore sell by dates, except for yoghurts and juices (once we've opened the carton) as I can never quite tell unless the yoghurt lid is puffed up and the juice is really fizzy. Although a day over I don't mind.Fluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!

Better not eat worcester sauce then if worried about things being out of date.
I heard on the food program radio 4 12.30 today that the anchovies in it are matured in vinegar for 3 years and the garlic and onion for 18 months to two years again in vinegar. And when it is all put together it is a matured for another 8-10 weeks.
And the longer it is left the better it tastes.
