thank god...its not just me!! we never take any notice of sell by or best before dates...use our eyes, nose and common sense, being wary of high risk foods.
its a ploy by food producers to make us waste and buy more food...i can`t remember how much each household wastes every year, but its quite shocking.
we are freegans, today we made jam with thrown out plums and sugar... 4lbs worth, only cost for the minute amount of cinnamon.
and any way we have a couple of pigs......so definately no waste at all.....any one thought of having a "home front" back yard pig?!0 -
Always get the spuds out of the plastic bag or they go squishey quickly. keep them in a very dark place as light makes them go green and then they are not at all good to eat. my spuds last a long while in a cardboard box with a thick cotton cloth to exclude the light.0

I've recently stopped using my veg rack altogether. Potatoes are now kept in my green Asda-bag-for-life in a cupboard where the door remains shut until I want potatoes out. All other veg is now kept in the salad drawer of the fridge wrapped in newpaper. Get rid of all plastic bags as soon as I get home. My veggies are now lasting MUCH longer than they used to do.0

as a child brought up woth rationing the idea of a 'best by date ' is hilarious .In our house as long as it wasn't actually moving it was eaten. Food was very scarce and rarely were you fussy about what you ate .no fridges or freezers then either .Cheese had the mouldy bits chopped off,not that there were many bits on any cheese that my Mum managed to get hold of.
Jam sometimes grew a bit of 'white stuff' on the top but that too was scraped off. kids were far too hungry to argue or question what was put in front of you. You just ate it up and was thankful and here I am nearly 70 years later still alive and kicking.
best before and best sell by dates are an invention of the supermarkets to get you to bin perfectly good food and buy some more of their pre-packed rubbish. I have yet to see a cucumber grown with a plastic shrinkwrap attached to it0 -
Ohh I buy 2 kg bags of organic potatoes and they can last me for 2 weeks - note that I live alone. They start sprouting but I remove all the bits. I don't even peel them because the skin contains most of the minerals and proteins.
Garlic and onions also. After a while they begin to grow a green stem but I just chop it up and use it - perfect too.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
OK, we've had the "sneaky" ones but what about your really irritating ones which you know annoy others, or other peoples' habits which annoy you?
Mine has to be washing and reusing the brown gravy soaked aluminium foil which I place under the lid of my caserole dish to help prevent liquid evaporating. My OH watches in sheer disbelief every time I do it. It's looking pretty tatty now but I'm still temped to squeeze one more time out of it before it finally gets tossed. :rotfl:  Does this beat the habit of an elderly relative of mine who always used to turn his underwear and sweaters inside out to get a few extra days' wear out of them before they had to be washed??0 -
No your elderly relative definitely wins - the sweaters maybe - but underwear? eurgh!!! :P0

My children think that some of my habits are eccentric, but when I'm able to assist them with funding their university education, I think they'll forgive me
I'll add this to the recent thread on taking MS too far

I can state with some authority that ships buscuits are still eaten in the dark! Quite frankly sometimes you are glad of the weevils for the much needed protein. Last trip I did we had beef that had "unsuitable for human conumtion, maritime use only" stamped on it. The only time you are guranateed not to eat out of date food on a ship is when a ship is just out of the dock, shipping companies would never pay the foodbill that would be incurred by throwing out old food.0

Furry onions, out of date mozarella, reused sandwich bags in lunchboxes...I feel so at home round here!
I was thinking of the bb/use by thing the other day - when I used my out of date mozarella on the pasta bake; in english, it had a use by date...but...in at least some of the other languages, it had a best before date. I figured if the Spanish and Portuguese could still use it, so could I.
As for crawlers in the food, what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over...but if my eye sees then no way!0
