I got 2Kg of spuds with a sell by date of 24 October. They were in a sealed plastic bag so I opened that and slipped the bag in the fridge. They're still fine. Had 3 small 'uns for tea - microwaved them as jacket spuds, cut them in half and covered them in grated cheese. Evening meal cost about 15p.

Still 2 left and they're as good as anything.
  • Hmm, the chips have thawed now so perhaps not any use for them :/

As for eating mould, penicillin is made from mould, it won't harm you. The only reason we don't eat it is it tastes horrible! :rotfl:
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

For the person that remembered the short story about 'Smith, Smith, Smith & Smith Removals', and the poisonous potatoes - I think that actually the little boy was poisoned with a chemical extract of whatever the poison was, but the coroner put it down to potato poisoning.

I think we can get too het up about mould on certain foods. As foreversomeday has pointed out, this is origin of penicillin, and how many of us enjoy eating Dolcelate, Stilton and Danish Blue cheese, which have mould deliberately grown in them ?

I used to get odd looks when I collected up Christmas Wrapping paper to be ironed and reused another year - I was told that I looked physically pained when the paper got ripped into unuseable sizes. I have decided to reinstate that bit of tightwaddery this year and let 'em snigger if they dare!
I can remember helping my mum to do this (ironing it on the reverse side helps to soften the sellotape so you can peel it off easily).

My mother still has wrapping paper from over 40 years ago, I kid you not!! It was a tradition that our Christmas presents were wrapped in the same paper with ribbon round. She then hovered around to make sure it wasn't scrumpled up, collected it and smoothed it over for the next time. No sellotape was ever allowed to be used and it's a habit I find it hard to break.

I dropped a chicken once whilst taking it out of the oven, so fed it hubby anyway;)

My Christmas Cake used to be a boiled fruit cake. I had boiled the fruit and put it on the kitchen windowsill to cool. This sill sloped!

My brother was visiting so we went into the lounge for a coffee and a natter. Suddenly there was a loud clang. The pan had slid off the window sill and emptied its contents into the spin dryer which had been left to dry with the lid open.

I scraped as much as possible back into the pan and continued to mix it. As my brother said, at least we knew the cake was clean lol. He was sworn to secrecy but did refuse a slice at Christmas!

With regards to an earlier post about frozen turkeys having a smell when defrosted does this appliy to chickens too??

I bought a Tesco chicken ages ago well within date and froze it immeadiately when i got home, 2 months later i defrosted it in the fridge ready for the sunday roast, when i opened it ,it was fully defrosted but smelt rotten you know the way poultry smells when it is past it, needless to say i binned it but after reading that about leaving defrosted turkey's for 30 mins for the smell to leave them does this apply as i have another one in the freezer now(really fresh) and am taking it out in a week or so and was a bit worried it might smell again...............

    I don't know....

    It just seems .. well..
Yeah we eat mouldy cheese and I can't really think of any reason why that's different other than maybe it's a controlled mould. And it's not the fluffy kind so it makes me think there's a significant difference.

Wake up, make bed, folding up all the extra blankets used for warmth.

Empty hot water bottles into a bucket, adding some stardrops for later ;)

Shower using a timer and wash your hair with watered down shampoo.

Get dressed into many layers, hat, gloves, scarf.... no you are not going out, it is just winter!

Put the kettle on with just enough water for a cup of tea, one tea bag for the whole family :D

Any leftover hot water?.... quick put it in a flask!!

Get the value porridge on the go for breakfast

Meanwhile stick a whoopsie bit of meat in the slow cooker with any veg that's on the turn, don't forget to add oats and lentils and a tin a value tomatoes ;). This meal will feed the family all month and will freeze beautifully.

Come on the forum to get some new recipes and check your flylady chores for the day.... they will help keep you warm :T

Grab that bucket of soapy stardrops water and clean the house. This and old rags will do every job known to man:j

Lunch? why leftovers of course! Mmmmm!

Get to the supermarket at the right time to bag all the bargains that are nearly out of date.

Pop to the library for free entertainment.

In the evening, light a candle and grab your OH and dog and a blanket, cuddle up for a fun evening. You may watch the tv but make sure that every appliance in the house is turned off at the plug.

At bedtime fill your hot water bottles with hot water from the tap, grab those blankets and make sure you go to sleep wearing thermal underwear, pyjamas, hat, scarf and gloves! Sex? no no no... it is far too cold and time consuming to take all those clothes off again ;)

Don't forget the basins in the bottom of the shower to collect the spare water!

I'm sure there should be a loaf of home made bread (to be eaten with HM butter and HM jam of course). And the evening wouldn't be complete without a glass of HM wine (didn't you notice the demijohns bubbling away in the corner?).
