Well done for tucking in. :D

Another query while we're at it - just found a packet of quakers porridge oats at the back of the cupboard dated April 2007. I can't imagine porridge oats go off terribly but I don't really know. I'm not putting myself at risk of weird porridge lurgies if I eat it am I?

They should be fine. I'm eating Oatso simple with a sell by date of August 2007 (it was cheap early on in the year). I seem to be alive and well just now.

They should be fine but look for wrigglers - I don't know if oats get weevils like flour does?

I used some cranberry sauce the other day that was BBE August 2003!!! :D

It had been in the fridge and only had a tablespoon or so used from it, presumably at xmas 2002 :rotfl:

It was absolutely fine though, no sign of any mould or deterioration, and I was heating it up in a gravy sauce so I thought why not

I was most disappointed that a packet of dried mushy peas with BBE Jan 2006 had gone off though :(

I recently took an unopened mange tout packet out of our bin (it was at the top) because Mr Frugal had, in his infinate wisdom, decided that being a couple of days out of date meant they were inedible

I chopped them up and they went in the minestrone and I made sure he was well aware that they were in there.

(ok, they were actually quite a lot out of date but looked perfectly fine and weren't even very bendy :rotfl: )

I keep a sack of spuds in my garage for at least 2 months. Kethry is right you will know when they're off -smell is vile and they go all mushy.

Surely buying 4 big potatoes loose would have been cheaper, and no packaging ;):)
  • I tend not to eat the putrid spuds! y'know the ones that feel liquidy when you pick them up- yuck, anything else gets de-eyed, de-greened and any other dogy bits hawked out and bobs your aunty! I was reading the other day (it was probably on here about companies bleaching the black bits which you get on potatoes cooking them, mashing them and putting it on your ready made cottage pies etc..) so I really wouldn't worry about your potatoes!

Skint_Catt they were in an unopened pre-packed bag. Mind you, you would have thought I'd dipped them in a nappy and then bleach judging by the look on DH face, he was disgusted:rotfl: . Hope he never finds out about the mix up between his muesli and the hamster cage :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Kethry I don't think I'd be so brave with the mozzarella though. Is it not an unpastuerised (sp) cheese?

JoJoB I reckon your oats will be OK though they might taste a wee bit fusty (is that even a word south of the border?)

erm...bug eggs already in the oats??

You'd be amazed how many bugs you eat in a year. Or maybe not.

Just don't look too closely and you won't see it moving...that's why ship's biscuits were apparently eaten in the dark on board ship in Nelson's time...and on the bright side it's added protein...

its a cow's milk mozarella, so i think it is pastuerised. it says best before rather than use by. does that make a difference? I haven't opened the bag yet, as i don't need to use it until tomorrow morning (not a problem if it has gone off, i can use something else, just don't wanna chuck it if its okay, yanno?).
