kethry - I think you'd know as soon as you open the bag whether it's gone off - I have used mozarella waaaaaaay out of date

thanks - I'll open the bag in the morning and have a whiff, then!!! I got some large flat mushrooms - was planning to put some mozarella in the bottom of the upside down mushrooms, some pesto ontop of that, then some breadcrumbs mixed with cheddar on top of that, bake the lot in the oven for breakfast. yum!!

  • I've used out of date mozzarella on top of a pasta bake and I lived to tell the tale.

What about jars of herbs & spices? Most of mine date back to 2002, I boxed them up when we moved 6 months and don't know whether to bin them or keep them. What would you do?

Thanks Angelmummy... as for jars and spices - they don't go "off" as such, they just lose their effectiveness.. smell them. if they smell sorta fusty (to use a wonderful word someone else used earlier in this thread) then bin em. If they still smell okay, then use them. you'll probably have to use more than the recipe calls for though.

  • I'm still using Cumin dated 2004. In fact, a liberal portion has just been sprinkled on meatballs about to go into passatta to cook. I'd still use 2002 but I doubt it would taste of anything really.

Re the mushrooms in mozzarella, it sound lovely.

I got pine nuts out to use in experimental bean burger recipe today and found them to be a year our of date. I put them in. Along with the thyme (of unknown vintage). THyme was like old grass! Pinenuts fine and bean burgers met with dd's approval - I hadn't made them before.

  • I nearly bought pine nuts today but put them back on account of their unbelievable One-Pound-Fifty-ness!! The only way pine nuts would end up a year out of date in my house is if I forgot about them or they were hiding from me.
