Last Saturday I bought 4 baking potatoes which we didn't use. DH threw them in the bin today as the use by date was 16/1. Now today is 19/1 but who EVER heard of potatoes going off in 3 days?

Anyway, I fished them out, picked the eyes out and popped them in the oven. They smell fab.

Now they're ready to come out. Shall I brave it and eat one? Right after posting I'll go put it on a plate with a bit of butter and then I'll have a think.

You wouldn't want to eat round my house then as I often have spuds in the fridge for weeks at time and still eat them :p:D

Honestly can't believe he would throw them away unless they were rotten and stinking!!!

I'd teach your OH to use his senses before binning food.

Does it look, smell and feel ok - and then does it taste ok?

What did people do before shops were made to put best before and use by dates on things? And if you had bought them loose, you wouldn't have had a best before date on them :D Unfortunately it seems that many people haven't a clue about food and have to rely on shops to [strike]keep their sales up[/strike] tell us when we "have" to chuck perfectly good food out. :o

They're fine just don't eat any green bits. Potatoes are stored for months on farms.

I'd go mad if OH did that! Well I do because he does :rotfl: I've never had to fish anything out of the bin cause I'm always around before he gets that far, but well done you! Potatos tend to go a bit far in our house, but they have to be really bad before I throw them! I take no notice of dates except for dangerous things like meats if they haven't been frozen.

i think you would know when spuds were off.. its like chicken in that respect. they really do smell and feel and look horrible - OH went shopping for me once and picked up a bag of spuds (didn't look at it before he got home) and when we opened the bag a horrible smell came out.. the ones at the bottom had gone off and .. ew. we ended up chucking the lot. the only thing i would be wary of, if its been in the bin, is what else it touched - cos bins aren't that clean. i'm not thinking of bacteria so much (being in the oven will have killed most bacteria!) but fluids from other foods, which may make the skin taste a bit off. maybe you could just eat the inside bit?

on a related note. i have some mozarella in the fridge. the round kind, in liquid, in a plastic bag, Aldi's light version. best before date is 5th Jan. i was thinking of using it with some big flat mushrooms tomorrow, baked in the oven with some kind of filling. what do people think? yes? no? would mozarella that is "off" be immediately noticeable once opened?

  • Am ready to dig in now :D

Thought it best that the butter be joined by a small amount of grated cheese (just in case cheese has medicinal properties:p )

Now, if I don't make it can you do something for me please?

Tell my DH and DS I love them
Tell my Boss that I hate him
Tell my credit card company that I won't be making my payments going forward (on account of being non living)

    Right, bib on........

Are you serving these pots to DH and DS and does DH know they're the ones from the bin? :rotfl: If not - don't tell him! :p

Sorry, but I think you're going to live to make those cc repayments, but you'll have the strength to face it with that lovely baked potato inside you.

Well done for tucking in. :D

Another query while we're at it - just found a packet of quakers porridge oats at the back of the cupboard dated April 2007. I can't imagine porridge oats go off terribly but I don't really know. I'm not putting myself at risk of weird porridge lurgies if I eat it am I?

i wouldn't think so. dried goods like that don't tend to go "off" in that sense - rather they just get more and more tasteless as the years go by. lol. i've eaten technically out of date porridge and lived to tell the tale!! I'd use it for something like flapjacks though, something that's well heated through :) i'm sure i saw a lovely flapjack recipe posted earlier - try that?
