have just made dd a lovely scarf with fluffy wool bought from the Works (cheapie book store) it was £1 per ball or 12 balls for £9.99, I know that Dunelm is selling the same wool. Used four balls to make one scarf so doesn't work out too bad. I think other people on this thread have mentioned the same deal.0

lillydrip wrote:A fancied the idea of making my own scarves as xmas pressies so just went into local craft shop and they wanted to charge £4.30 for a ball of wool! Needless to say I did not buy it because then my scarves would hardly be moneysaving, is this generally the price of wool? (I'm a first time knitter!) and if not can anybody suggest cheaper places to buy wool. My local It's a Gift were charging £1.50 for a tiny ball.Official DFW Nerd no. 082! :cool:Debt @ 01/01/2014 £16,956 Debt now: £0.00 :j

Today i went to the library and got out a huge christmas book full of ideas for decorating, HM gifts and food. Just had a quick look through so far but already there are many things that have caught my attention. Once everyone is alseep tonight i will settle down with it
Plus brought a play house from tescos, just one of those ones made of rods and a plastic oversheet, its a sweet little cottage design and was down from about £15 to £2.50. Was going to wrap it for one of my boys chrimbo pressies but have decided to put it away for easter. When my daughter was little i brought her one and put it up the night before easter, decorated it in a spring theme and filled it with eggs and baskets, she loved it. I think i will do something similar next easter for the boys.
Got a spiderman mug and batman mug for 75p each reduced from nearly £2 at a poundstretchers type place and they will love those. Might even fill them with some HM cookies or sweets.Success means having to worry about every thing in the world......EXCEPT MONEY. Johnny Cash

I always find it hard to buy for my dad as he always insists he doesn't want anything. A couple of years ago in a box wrapping in Christmas paper I gave him a winter kit of (well these are the things I can remember)
de-icer
WD40 wipes
handwarmers
sore throat sweets
lipsalve
ovaltine
chilli con carne packet mix
tin of chicker curry from M&S
tin of steak and kidney from M&S
tin of chunky winter soup from M&S.
None of it was particulary exciting I do admit, but it was all things he could and did use and so wasn't just another unwanted present that might have sat gathering dust.
The same year we gave my in-laws a tray from the pound shop decorated with a Christmas pattern along with Christmas biscuits, tea and coffee from M&S.
Finally another idea is in a wicker basket put a small bottle of bucks fizz, bubble bath, bath bomb and candle. Add a pretty label saying Bathtime Bubbles and wrap in cellophane....it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.

Added another pressie to my lift.
Got a ceramic money box shaped like a cartoon tropical fish for my dad. Whose recently passed his divers course, and so this will be the start to his savings for their holiday to egypt next year for the renting of his diving equipment which is q.expensive!
Also joined library today, and although its quite small got a book on salt dough craft and am thinking of spending my day off practising some of that, and seeing if I can make some xmas decorations and gift tags for my presents this yearWealth is not measured by currency0 -
finc wrote:Sorry OT, but have you tried one of the QVC outlet shops? There's one in Warrington which I know isn't near you and I know there's another in Wiltshire somewhere. Check if there's any others near you as I've seen loads of the Kirks Folly stuff in there with huge discounts. Could save a bit of money if you can get to the shops
There's one in Shrewsbury, as well, if that's any good. (nowhere near me, boo hoo! )0 -
Got a great book from the libarary yesterday: Ruth Eliots' Vegetarian Christmas. Loads of ideas, so no nut roast for me this year!0

Well the christmas shopping has started in earnest!
£1.50 for 3 baskets in Wilkinsons todayno idea what they were reduced from but they were clearing them out and they look really nice! Wooden type baskets
Also went to Bicester Outlet Village and bought some Molton Brown stuff. 8 mixed bottles for £31 enough for a mousturiser and either shower or bath bubbles for 4 people (mum, step dads mum, best mate and her daughter who's also a VERY good friend and our emergency cat/dog/house sitter) So £7.75 for each set of 2. I'm making jam so there will be some of that added to each "hamper", I'm hoping to make Sloe gin (I've found 3-4 bushes round here... just need to wait for the first frost
) and maybe a blackberry vodka liqueur... Then add some home made HUGE cookies and anything interesting from my "freebies" and job done!
I'm hoping to do the same for OHs mum and step dad too... My dad deserves something really special this year as he's been such a superstar! Not sure what yet but I'll come up with something
£220 in vouchers and saving stamps etc so we're looking good for x-mas this year!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

 I need help
It is my boyfriend's 21st birthday on 8th December, and obviously Xmas is only a few weeks later! But I'm really stuck as to what to get for him!!
We are saving for a trip to NYC next winter (2007) and have agreed that for our respective 21st birthdays and Xmas' we are only going to spend £10 on each other (including card) and put the other £90 or so that we'd usually spend into our savings fund...
But I'm stuck!! He's really difficult to buy for usually without a budget as he doesn't really have a "hobby" as such - he's a techie and loves his computers and gadgets but I never know what to get!!! Last Xmas I bought him a wallet, socks  , and a computer gadget that he'd asked for, and for his birthday I made him a "sexy cheque book" <-- wish I'd saved that for this year though!!
So please, OS'ers - I have £20 and I need 2 presents for a 21yo male!! :eek:0
