My children have always had a stocking given at their first christmas, even though they all celebrated their first christmas when they where only a few months old. It may seem a waste of time but even at a few months old they enjoy the texture and feel of the stocking and ours have always had bells as well (sound, texture, manipulation, stockings can be great educational tools:D ). On the first christmas we usually filled the stocking with a few little bits like rattles and books and so on. So in my opinion it is never to early.

All of mine have still got their first stocking, though my daughters has needed to be mended a few times as she is almost 14, and i intend to still fill them when they are alot older.

Its one of the things i love most about christmas day, the jingle of the stocking bells as the children come running into our bed on christmas morning, all of us snuggling up whilst they are emptied of their treasure and our bed becomes covered in wrapping paper:D

We also have handmade advent calenders for each of the children which we fill with little treats or pennies, does anyone else do this? I prefer these type of advent calenders rather than ths shop brought chocolate ones as they are more personal and more fun for all of us.

We've always done the stockings from DS1 who is now 9, our youngest is 4 months so will only be 7 months at Christmas, but he will still get a small stocking. I've made stockings myself for my older two, DD is 4 so will need to make one for baby now too. I love them coming into our room Christmas morning with them too.

I don't like the advent calendars you buy now with chocolates in, I used to like the traditional ones we used to get with just the pictures and lots of glitter on the outside, much more festive.
When we only had DS1 when he was about 5 or 6, we had an old christmas tree, just a small one and I bought 24 small gifts.. sweets, pencils, erasers, etc wrapped them all up and put the numbers on them. I hung them on the tree and each day he would open a small gift in the run up to Christmas, he loved it.
We had to get rid of the tree after that as it fell to bits, so the next year we put the gifts in a shoe box and he had to find the numbered gift to open. Last year as i had 2 I bought one playmobil calendar and wrapped 25 gifts, each day they alternated, one opened gift and one opened the calendar, then they swapped over, it seemed to work rather well. Not sure what to do this year though, any suggestions.. can work out a lot of money buying 50 small gifts!

Just wanted to remind everyone that www.holidaygrandplan.com started their Christmas countdown on August 27th. (This was mentioned several pages back in this thread and sorry I cannot remember who first shared the info but thanks again!)
I just had a look and printed off a couple of their lists which I hope will get me more organised!

I did a similar advent calender for my SDs last year. I made 24 pockets in some Christmas material and embroidered the numbers on, then wrapped 24 little pressies. Mini chocs, bottle of nail varnish, nail files etc etc. I bought a lot of boots 3 for 2 gift sets and split them up to get the pressies.

    Seemed to go down well.

Thankfully we don't have children yet so no need to worry about advent calendars this year :) We do have godchildren tho so still have to buy pressies for those - as they don't live nearby then I might get away with buying their pressies in the sales after christmas hehehehe

Planning on filling some planters for my Mum this year, went into Homebase earlier & found them selling off sets of 3 terrocotta embossed planters for £7.99 down from £20 & 20% off all their spring bulbs so got a 100 bulb mixed pack for £8:D Would normally need to buy potting compost but we are having some topsoil delivered next month so will use some of this;)

Now in the process of making our Christmas "pudding", which is actually a autum variataion of a summer pudding, made with autum fruit which I have picked for free (balckberries, plums & apples) with cinnamon, ginger honey & nutmeg & HM sultana bread. Will freeze ready for the day:D

Also about 1/3rd of the way through knitting my sons Xmas stocking, however it is turning out HUGE:rolleyes: That'll teach me for doing it by eye rather than measuing. It'll cost me far too much in presents to fill it:eek:

Lillydrip, I get my wool from the local pound shop & yes, you've guessed it, £1 a ball for double knitting wool;)

Well I managed to get (free!) from work today two bottles of Lavendar room spray, which had to be written off from our store as apparently were over-filled at warehouse and the shoplights cause the bottles to heat up and explode. However was told feel free to take them, and not to moan if they exploded. So I've squirted a bit of excess about my room and now they are filled at the same level as the new replacement ones in our store!

Also got two packs of coasters for nothing, as they came in delivered broken, well broken LIDS! Which means carrier company has to pay for them and I got given those too!Should be £12!

    So 2 x 12 + 2 x 4 + £32 worth of gifts for nothing! Woohoo!!!!
