lillydrip wrote:A fancied the idea of making my own scarves as xmas pressies so just went into local craft shop and they wanted to charge £4.30 for a ball of wool! Needless to say I did not buy it because then my scarves would hardly be moneysaving, is this generally the price of wool? (I'm a first time knitter!) and if not can anybody suggest cheaper places to buy wool. My local It's a Gift were charging £1.50 for a tiny ball.
£4.30!!! It would depend on what sort of wool it was. If it was Llama, then probably yes but acrylic should only be about £1.50-£2.00 max for a 50g ball of wool. I've just bought some pure wool at £2.09 for a 50g ball.
Also, in craft shops they sometimes have a bargain bucket with lots of cheap balls of wool. If you were gonna make scarfs then perhaps you could mix and match the colours!I consider myself to be very lucky. :j Apart from my mortgate, I am debt free. I do not own a credit card and I even have £400 saved in Premium Bonds. :A :grouphug:0 -
Thanks to this thread I've been looking to make scarves for everyone for Christmas, went into 'Its A Gift' and bought 'fluffy' wool for 99p a ball.
DD (6 yo)will only need 2 balls and adults probably 2-3 balls.
Making up hampers with all 3 for 2 offers and BOGOF's and putting in scarves as well.
Thanks everyone for the ideas, haven't knitted in about 20 years, can't believe how much fun its been!Jo x:A0 -
My Favourite Christmas Cake recipe - includes holiday cheer - you can't go wrong

1 tsp baking soda
1 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup of brown sugar
2 cups of dried fruit
lemon juice

Sample the vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the vodka again. To be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink.
Repeat
Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar. Beat again.
At this point it's best to make sure the vodka is shtill OK.
Try another cup .... just in case Turn off the mixerer.
Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.
Pick fruit off floor.

If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers pry it loose with a drewscriver.
Sample the vodka to check for tonsisticity.
Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who giveshz a !!!!.

If you're looking for cheap wool, its always worth looking in the charity shops - some of the shops near me have large bags full of oddments of different colours for only about £2 - £3 a bag. You'd also probably be able to get some cheap knitting needles and patterns at the same time if you need them.0

We are saving for a trip to NYC next winter (2007) and have agreed that for our respective 21st birthdays and Xmas' we are only going to spend £10 on each other (including card) and put the other £90 or so that we'd usually spend into our savings fund...
But I'm stuck!! He's really difficult to buy for usually
So please, OS'ers - I have £20 and I need 2 presents for a 21yo male!!
Roz_V How about getting him a passport holder with his initials on and maybe a travel kit with travel size toiletries, Studio cards did the passport holders last year for £3.50 and you can buy travel size items from boots. You could also put a dollor bill inside a piggie bank which may give him the insentive to add more ready for your trip!:pMum to 2 beautiful daughters born Oct 05 & Oct 08

For girls who have dollshouses [and are over the age of putting things in their mouths] you can make very effective vegetables and other foodie bits from Fimo in the correct scale.
