Hi all
rnshon says it's exactly 4 months to Christmas. And summer's not even over yet. No, sorry, can't think about it. Got a phone call from the hospital this morning - I've been on a waiting list since mid-February to have second revision of hip replacement. Would I like to come in on 19th October. Yes, would I ever. So you can see that thinking about Christmas is way down on my list of things to think about.
I'd like to get our bedroom done before then - we stripped the wallpaper but we need the builder 2 doors down to come in and do some work for us: move the central light to the centre and not in front of the window, do the ceiling, a few little things. He's promised to 'fit us in when he has a spare day'. It's summer, and he's busy busy! We can't paint the walls or anything until he's done the ceiling. Then I want the old carpet ripped out and replaced - no good until we've painted. Finally I want a new bed. I'd like it all done before mid-October!
Good news - my granddaughter has today enrolled on a BTEC course in travel & tourism at a nearby college. She did abysmally badly in her AS levels French and English last week. I think it was the right decision to leave 6th form and go to a FE college, but she'll find it very different, not like school, no one nags you to work, it's all down to yourself! The BTEC actually includes languages, French and Spanish, and from what her mum says it sounds a lot better, more practical for her.
Oh BTW, my one concession to Christmas - when I went to the farm where we buy our meat every month, I ordered 2 free-range chickens for September and a free-range turkey for Christmas. If we're at home we can cook the turkey for ourselves, if we decide to go and visit the family in the Midlands we can cook the turkey and take it with us.

Good luck on the surgery.
Of course you will have more to think about but I think the real meaning of the thread is to avoid the commercialism and to prepare things that are meaningful or needed or wanted - a real expression of sharing rather than just buying something that will take ages to pay off but looks good and expensive!
The real meaning of christmas - or any other religious holiday to me - is to be with the people that you care about - to share a meal with love etc. Everything else is advertising."This site is addictive!"

Forgot to point out that I mentioned this thread to DH ( who does not do christmas - or anything else) and it scared the life out of him!"This site is addictive!"

Sorry didn't mean to traumatise everyone by mentioning the 'C' word today!
Margaretclare - that's great news that you've got a date through, hope you manage to get everything you wanted done before then.
I managed to get approx 3 inches done of the scarf I am knitting for my sister's present this evening - this is the real reason I have to start so early - my knitting is very, very slow!!0 -
You are lucky that your knitting is just very slow - mine is very, very bad as well!"This site is addictive!"

LMAO @ elona :rotfl:
I was going to go and get some knitting needles over the weekend but I've suddenly remembered that I can't remember how to cast on
I taught myself to knit years ago with a brilliant old book that showed everything in great detail, shame I lost it years ago
I am going to study the bank account carefully and see if I can scrounge some money to buy some small presents this weekend. I have to take DS to cycle club tomorrow and it's only 2 minutes walk from there into town.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

rnshon, good luck with the scarf! My friend sent me a pic of some knitting needles she's had a 6-month wait for - ebony and some other gorgeous wood - made from the bits left over from making musical instruments! Now THERE is a pro; my knitting would just be an insult to those needles!
Moggins, just get the needles and wool into your hands, and I'm SURE casting on will come back to you. It's eerie how it stays with you. Even casting off came back to me! And I am a VERY basic knitter.
I ordered some magnetic paper from an ebay seller for fridge poetry gifts, but failed to realise that I was ordering sheets pre-cut into jigsaws! So now I have nine sheets of that. Wondering whether I can salvage the situation with some interesting fridge jig-saws for Christmas presents!...what a dunce! I really like this whole fridge thing...but thinking about it (as one who was given some fridge dominoes which have yet to make it onto the fridge), how many people will sit by the fridge playing games?....0 -

Thanks for the good wishes.
We normally have a nice quiet time just the 2 of us for Christmas itself. Go to church then go down the sea-front - one year it was so sunny, people were down there eating ice-cream or just walking about enjoying the scenery.
It's been years since I bothered about Christmas presents. May send charity flowers to the daughters, stepdaughters and stepdaughters-in-law. I usually send cards and often a letter telling old friends what we've been up to in the year.
Some of the people we would most like to be with are no longer here, so we think about them, perhaps go into a cathedral and light a candle for them.
