    My sneaking suspicion is that the Line Rental Plan is just the Line Rental and as such is pointless - the former BT Option 1, now called the Unlimited Weekend Plan is the same price and covers this - so in effect you're paying the same without the benefit of free weekend calls. My suspicion for its existence is that if you make no calls that count to BT (whether they have to be chargable or part of the plan is another debate that's yet to be settled) then the penalty is you lose free weekend calls of up to 60 minutes duration. They'd then (I assume) be charged in the same way non-inclusive calls on that plan are charged.
    Thats exactly right according to BT

    I accused them of sharp practice, which they denied. But it goes like this-

    If people think that they can get away without incurring call charges by calling only at weekends, BT will 'shaft' them by moving them to Linerental only where ALL calls are chargeable. So that would be 6p set up and 4p a minute. Thats 10p for a 1 min call:eek:
    [strike]Debt @ LBM 04/07 £14,804[/strike]01/08 [strike]£10,472[/strike]now debt free:j

    Target: Stay debt free

    As luck would have it, my local Indian Takeway has recently changed its opening time from 6pm to 5.30pm during the week - so I'll be using their number for my 'qualifying calls' from now on. Timing my order call on Friday showed I can place my order in 49 seconds!
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    To be implemented on 1 February and 1 April 2008, I believe:

    (1). BT Together Option 1 to increase from £11/month to £11.75/month. At the moment, this plan allows evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls of up to an hour for 4½p each but unconfirmed rumour has it that, at the same time as the 75p increase, the 4½p per call charge for weekend UK 01/02 calls will be scrapped;

    (2). BT Together Option 2 to decrease from £3.45/month to £2.70/month;

    (3). BT Together Option 3 to decrease from £7.95/month to £5.95/month.

    (4). The paper-free discount to increase from 50p/month to £1.25/month - effectively eliminating the 75p increase for those on BT Together Option 1.

    Is it worth using the BT option 3 for 12 months, then going back to option 1, primus and 18185?

    So a chargeable call is one that costs you money?

    Sorry for the dumb question, but I read elsewhere that a chargeable call is one which is not free - i.e. inclusive - a weekend call on option 1.....

    That would depend on how many peak calls you make,as you can get free evening and weekend calls.

    You can buy approx 119 peak calls a month from 18185 for £5.95p. Also if your away / on holiday you dont pay for something you are not using.

    So if you make less then approx 28 peak calls a week its not worth it.

    Its exactly what it says on the tin. A call that you have to pay for,not one thats included in inclusive minutes.

    BT can't do that - for one thing there is no 'line rental only' tariff in the BT Price list...

    I have a feeling whoever told you that at BT was just making things up as they went along..

    One thing to factor in though is that you'll be paying just the standard Option 1 price for 3 months then £5.95 for 9 months. That means you'll be paying, when it's averaged out over 12 months, just over £4.46 a month for Option 3 (on top of your line rental obviously). This means, you'd be better of on Option 3 if you have to make 90 or more peak time calls a month via 18185 on average - or 21 calls or more per week.

    So what exactly is 'the Line Rental Plan' that BT talk about in the small print.

    "2. Available to eligible residential BT Together Option 1 (‘Unlimited Weekend Plan’ from 1st April) customers who make at least one chargeable call a month with BT. BT reserves the right to move customers from the BT Together Option 1 (‘Unlimited Weekend Plan’ from 1st April 2008) to the Line Rental Plan if they make less than one chargeable call a month.!
