Lots of brilliant ideas, thank you.

I really was hoping to get away with cleaning it without having to drain the water, but it sounds like that is a no go.

I'll have a go at it tomorrow. Think I'll drain the water and try the vinegar soaked paper etc first and let you know how I get on! Now it's been suggested, I seem to remember it from How Clean is your House too.
Cupboard is full of vinegar as I use it for lots of cleaning, along with Stardrops.

A friend suggested I get a mutual friend round who is fondly known as "Sarah Oven Cleaner", as her voice is so loud and harsh, she can strip an over at 50 paces. :D

Brick / patio cleaner based on sulphamic acid.

Do not mix with bleach or any other cleaning product.

I picked up some denture cleaning tabs cheaply today, so may try a couple of those, but then will start to work through your suggestions if they don't work.

Luckily, I do have another loo, so this one can be out of action for a while.

I was going to suggest these :D When my son moved into his flat, the loo was vile with limescale. Got him some Boots own brand ones, and told him to chuck a couple down just as he left for work each day. 3 days later, sparkling loo :D

Even though you're not keen on chemicals, from the sounds of it they would be by far the easiest and surest way to tackle this problem. A one-off chemical clean (or maybe two if it's really bad!) should get it into good condition, and then you can stick to natural products to maintain it in the future.

Personally I would get some limescale remover (from the loo cleaner aisle), apply liberally, leave for as long as possible, then scrub vigorously with a loo brush.

Found some Cillit Grime and Lime in the back of the cupboard and chucked just over half a bottle down there, left for 36 hours and the limescale and staining is 90% gone! I know I said I don't like to use harsh chemicals, but this really did the job without having to drain the water out and I view it as almost a one-off as I do clean toilets regularly.

I think one repeat application will totally take care of the problem. Took some time but refreshing to find a product that does what it says it does.

I live in London and suffer badly from limescale in the toilet.

I tried the coca cola, left it in over night and nothing. As expected!

I shall try vinegar next time.

Vinegar gets my vote- needs to be left for a long time though.

You'll need some acid to remove heavy scale, but once it's gone you can buy a continuous loo cleaner. I've been using the kiwi kleen stuff from poundland for ages now and it has kept the loo completely limescale free despite living in a hard water area:

    http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/kiwi-kleen-continuous-toilet-cleaner/

It adds some acid, plus chemicals that bind the limescale and prevent it depositing in every flush, as well as some detergent that keeps the bowl clean in general. Unlike the cistern blocks it lasts really well, about a couple of months.
