mary43 - its very sad now that most people are so obsessed with expensive things that mean nothing.
My Nana rarely bought herself anything, apart from when my Grandad died she bought one of those cottage suites for her living room and I didnt like it at all it was more comfy sitting on the floor!
Its funny you say about the touching as my Nana was very much the same... she would pull a face if you went to kiss her.
I make sure I always cuddle my Mum and sister and always kiss them goodbye. My sis is a softie too and often when I go round to see her and we sit in bed watching DVDs its soo lovely! With OH Im crazy bout him and rush to the door for cuddles when his car pulls onto the drive! Im going to make sure there are always plenty of hugs in our home.
I think the covered coat hangers sound lovely what do men know! Its certainly a gift that an older person will really appreciate.
The rose hamper sounds great too, so thoughtful.0 -
With the bits and bobs I've picked up from the charity shops its all sort of fallen into 'themes'..................ex foster girls is all browns and creams - I know she'll like that.........MIL would be happy no matter what but know she likes 'feminine; colours, my friend will end up with an assortment -she prefers it that way.
I seem to have amassed collections of blue things, lavendar, and pink......lol
Looking at what I've got recently I can see ex foster girl having mostly white for Christmas apart from two bottles of red bath oil............I've got white bath towel and then I got hand towel and face cloth with tassels, white drawer sachets, white candle in cream candle holder...........oh the list goes on.
I really must go up there and sort it out so I know whos having what........lol
But its been lovely spending money on stuff like that instead of frittering it away on myself which is what I'd have done.
Must keep an eye on the cost of it all..........I;m spending on average about £10 a week............lol The idea was to make birthdays and christmas cheaper....................lolMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Ooo that white hamper stuff sounds lovely. I get a catalogue from the white company and there stuff is all lovely home and bath things in whites.
Im thinking of doing primitive gift hampers for Christmas, lots of gingham, homemade shortbread, chutneys and jams, elderflower cordial... cant start these for ages tho!0 -
They sound nice.............I'm not good at anything like that..........home made jam ??? It's another world to me I'm afraid.
At least so far I'm managing to stick to my 'recycling' pledge and I've been really lucky in what I've managed to get ..........so far anyway.
Think I might sort through some of it over the weekend so I know where I am with it all and do a check list of who's having what.
I want to price each hamper up too..........the general aim is for each one to not cost more than £5-£6 - Won;t be the end of the world if I go over my limit but I'll be disappointed with myself more than anything else.Mary

Just thought Id offer a few mothers day basket ideas if anyone is feeling a bit stuck...
Spa Basket- pretty soaps, scented votives, super soft towels, lotions and wooden handled hairbrush. Add to this some sprigs of dried lavender.
Gardeners Basket -pair of garden clogs, gloves,an apron, pruning snips, seed packets and plant labels.
Chefs Basket- replace any worn out kitchen items with new measuring cups, spoons, spatulas and pastry brushes. Add to this some herbs and spices in little jars, and black peppercorns in a cello bag tied with ribbon. You could even add a nice apron or some teatowels to this.
Crafters Basket - use a pretty basket and fill with pretty handled scissors, pinking shears, pins and needles, a small pin cushion, a rainbow of threads, a tape measure and maybe even a small thimble.

I've found a really good item to add to these baskets is a small notebook & pencil - for gardeners, it's useful when you want to make a list of what needs changing/moving around in the garden or say, which annuals did or didn't work well. For chefs, obviously for recipes/amending amounts of ingredients or noting people's likes and dislikes, a notebook is useful. And for crafters, you can jot down measurements and ideas of items to make etc.0 -
For mothers day I usually visit with big hand tied flower arrangements.Up until last year I ordered them from a florist costing about £50 each for both mum and MIL.I would also buy some sweets or chocs to give from the kids:eek: .Looking back on those kind of spending habits its easy to see how I got into trouble.
Last year I bought a load of flowers from the flower seller in the street, bought 2 sheets of cellophane from the florist and made up the hand tied bouquets myself with springtime colours of tissue paper and ribbon. They cost about £15 each and were as nice as the florist does:D .
This year however things are going to be different and cheaper:p .
I have already bought 2 boxes of continental chocolates from tesco. They were valentine chocs at £7.99 reduced to £1.99 and are in a beautiful re-usable deep rose coloured box with subtle silver hearts design.I also bought valentine gift bags reduced to 25p each and little valentine teddies reduced from£3 to 50p each, all from tesco.
I also plan to buy 2 easter baskets from Poundland and plant them up with springtime flowers, daffs, crocus, etc(I have them on the windowledge growing now)
So flowers in a basket(we have the bulbs growing already but they would not be expensive to buy),a pretty box of chocs and a little teddy and a gift bag too(if I have to use it) for£3.74 each mum.I will have a go at making cards, will raid my kids craft box and see what there is.If I do buy them m&s do lovely cards for £1.

Hi guys, I know this will sound bad but I don't normally get my mum anything, it's normally presents from the kids that are given. However, I have decided that I will perhaps bake some big cakes this year and give to mum and stepmil. For the children I was thinking of getting an artist canvas(99pfrom HB) and letting them go with the paint
.Will definetley be making my cards this year as the xmas ones went down quite well. I can't believe everything is so early this year.
