  • Not completely sure of what we're getting mum, mil and my nan but rough ideas are:
Nan: mini soaps, (got already) and i want to get her a tea and biscuits set in the boots sale, hope there's some left!
Mil: probably a mothers day ornament, (loves ornaments!!) flowers, choc ...
mum: i want to make her a toiletry hamper, she only uses basic things like shower gel, soap, shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser. (no bath salts, fizzers, body lotion etc!) and i think she'd like something useful! boots are doing shower gel for 29p at the mo so planning on getting those x 10, simple moisturiser x 1, shampoo and conditioner x 5, soap x 4. then flowers and choc:j
also a nice pic of lo for them all:D
    List so far!
Nan: mini soaps £1.25, thorntons diabetic chocs £4.25
Mil: Elizabeth Arden red door perfume gift set £8, talc 75p
Mum: Thorntons chocs £5.25, toiletry basket so far: 5 x shower gels 29p each, simple soap 4 pack x 2 £1.96 (bogof) need to buy simple moisturiser, shampoos and conditioner x 5 and deodorants x 5.
I need to think of more things!! Probably a plant for mil, would like to buy flowers for my mum but wont be able to carry them on the bus/train:rolleyes:
Have a budget of about £30 each for our mums and £20 for my nan but im all out of ideas this year:rolleyes:

I;ve sorted out MIL (I think)..........found a pretty bag complete with Royal Jelly stuff in one of the charity shops so think I'll post that off to her. Has to be something postable due to the distance.
As for my Mum...........thats a bigger problem. She's quite poorly, fed through a tube and bedridden so apart from smellies or a new nightie (she had loads at Christmas) I'm getting stuck for ideas. She's in a care home and has limited space for plants and already has enough (I bought her some at Christmas) and she's inundated with photos of grandchildren.
    Any ideas ?

If she cant see very well what about buying her an audio book, or a little mp3 player, you can download her favourite songs or even some storys to listen to. i know its not the same thing but my ds loves listening to harry potter on his mp3 player. im sure that you could find an audio book somewhere on the web to download.

lots of libraries have audio CDs now. My mum wasn't very well recently, she was housebound, fed-up to the teeth with the TV and crosswords and I got her several talking books and she found them great - didn't have to do anything just sit back and listen. They are also handy if you have weak wrists and can't hold open a book for very long.

I think you might find free software on the web for converting into mp3 format.

another thought for your mum - could you find a manicurist, hairdresser or masseuse to come in to see her for a treat? A hand massage and a paraffin oil treatment is very relaxing and soothing.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Mum already has audio books she's never listened to. My son got them for her after she went to the care home but to mum, books are for reading.....very stubborn like that she is. CD's shes got loads of but seldom listens to them now. Her CD player is in the lounge of her flat and she's in the bedroom and there's no room for it in there.
I wondered about someone to do her nails etc. but she sleeps a lot of the time and think she might feel really confused if she woke and a stranger was doing what she would consider 'personal' things. I booked one the other year before she got really poorly and at the last minute she asked me to cancel it. Didn't want a stranger there she said.
Think I'll go with the photograph of her and her brother as children. She was fond of him I know and often talked about him and the photograph I've got to copy from is small enough to stand by the side of my Dads photo.

Thanks for all the ideas. If she weren''t so poorly they would have been perfect.

  • Ooo mary43 I think the photo gift would be perfect. I remember when by Nana was very ill, it was difficult to find something as a nice gift for her, I had done her nails and hair before but once she became very ill she was in bed and not bothered with anything... everyone tends to get the same thing,
    smellies, nightie, etc.
I think some of the things people got for my Nana were, some nicely arranged fruit and I got her lots of sleep therapy things from Avon.
My Nana was never bothered about expensive things, she always loved markets, cheapy £1 shops, fetes and car boots sales. She was always immaculate and did a fabulous job of bringing up my Mum and Aunties on a very tight budget. My sister, myself and our cousins always laughed at Nana`s goodie parcel we got at Christmas, the books always had scribbles in them from the previous owners!Bless her though she made such a huge effort especially when there are loads of us Grandchildren. My Aunty once recieved a smellies set for her birthday and the tag was written out "To Barbara Love Jane" and my Aunties name is Sue!:rotfl:

Would your Mum like some nice lavender oil maybe??? Its great for sleep probs, or maybe some handcream with lavender in it and you could sit and massage it into her hands and arms while you are sat with her???

I hope you dont mind a few suggestions???
    :j
  • So far for my Mum Ive got:-

A handcrafted decoupage card ( I made this from a paper nation template)
A hand knitted scarf ( I made myself from Sirdar Firefly Wool)
A magnifying mirror for Crafts( Mum does cross stitch but says she struggles sometimes to see the little squares)
A hand beaded sugar spoon ( one of my new creations)

My sister and I are also going to take Mum out for a nice tea during the week as my sister is away on Mothers Day.

On Mothers Day morning Im taking some freshly baked cupcakes to have with a nice cafetiere of coffee ( one of Mum`s favs).

I keep asking OH what he is getting for MIL and he just shrugs... I know he will leave it till last min...but I`m leaving it to him to sort.

princesspoppy - your Mums day pressies sound lovely and thanks for the ideas for my Mum.
I did think about lavender products.........she used to love to go to Norfolk Lavender and loved their hand cream. Think I just might have some among my 'hamper' stuff along with lavender soap. She doesn't have trouble sleeping, in fact she sleeps most of the time but maybe the smell of it will bring some memories back for her. So, photo and some lavender stuff seems like the answer.
My Mum was a bit like your Nana - very thrify woman. Think it came from war time when things were so scarce. I've taken her shopping in the past and she's bought nothing - 'didn't need it' was the usual reason. Treat herself ? Not my Mum.........too busy treating everyone else.

At the care home she gets her hair washed and the staff are very good and give her a manicure to keep her nails tidy.I always massage her hands and feet when I'm there. Did it from the first time she was in hospital and she'd never realised how soothing it could feel. If I'd suggested doing that for her when she was well she'd have laughed and said 'not likely'........touching was not something out family did much sadly.

Old people are a problem. MIL is easier although she's housebound but I've got her sorted out -for her birthday its silk covered coathangers (OH says they're naff but I know she'll love them), and I've sort of 'themed' her
basket around flowers, mostly roses.........rose shaped soaps, china mug with roses on, and other bits and pieces.

I was going to send her the bag with Royal Jelly stuff in for mums day but looking at it again it doesn't look like much but there's plenty of other stuff in my 'hamper room' to choose from. Like a little shop up there it is........lol
