Hi QT - I remembered when you joined us meaning to point out we have similar goals. I started off at 13st 1 and have lost 2.5 st and I couldn't really imagine doing it at first, but I found plan that just worked for me without too much difficulty/stress and that has been the key. I've averaged 1lb a week and it took 7 months. On the other hand, I have been able to do very little exercise for health reasons so if you've got that option, that should help, as long as it is something you enjoy. Are you a calorie counter? Were /when are you hitting temptation that 's stopping you achieving want you want: maybe you need to plan around those hot spots better? Are you building in enough treats so you don't feel deprived?

BB- i am not a calorie counter at all, i think i get confused when i look on the pack- some stuff it is clear because it says 100 calories, but if it doesn't is the number after energy or kcal- the calories? I get confused- if anyone can help please do!

Is there such things as good treats...because the things that i eat that is the worst is chocs, sweets, biscuits and crisps!! I have a sweet tooth, and I was grown up eating big meals, that had a lot of seasoning and salt in it...i keep hearing jelly so i will give that a try and i love fruits and certain veg.

Anywhoo wow i see some great losses, well done raphael, perfect10, grannynise, GPUK, likklegibbon, lucygotit, beanielou, FFM and dellybelly I know there are loads more, but too much to remember so those i don't mention keep it up!

Also well done maintainers katyk, Intergalatic Floozie, I am starting to understand that it is almost as difficult to maintain than to lose weight!

tafty1969, bails- dont worry about the gain i put on 4lb!! last week, and now I have managed to break even, so you will get it off in no time!

serendisglair- sorry about your crap morning, hope it gets better- just stay away from the chocolate bar, if you have it around, give it to someone else or throw it away and replace it with a fruit salad or some ryvita biscuits or something healthy

Andie2308- check this site out http://www.cspinet.org/nah/chinese.html it seems the only good thing is the soups, stir fry green beans, shrimps with lobster sauce and stir fried veg..maybe the restaurant can make you a special stir fry mix with loads of veg and less oil...

Anyway time for me to get outta bed and start doing some studying!

    Have a good day all!

Hey guys, wow lots of posts since yesterday! I've been really busy preparing ebay listings (80 of them  ) for tomorrow's cheap listing day. Hoping to make a few quid with those :D

It's starting to seem like a bit of a long month, but I'm determined not to go to the supermarket again until February! 9 days... I've run out of muller vitality drinks, and the diet coke situation is looking slightly bleak. Those are things that would normally have me rushing to the supermarket, and then of course I'd spend £30+ on other top-up stuff just because I'm there!

Suggs, sorry to hear you had a tough weekend but congrats on the 1lb loss!

KPC congrats on your fab loss too, and I'm so sorry you've gone down with the bug :(. My son had it 2 weeks ago, and it was dreadful, but he was back to normal within 48 hours and I hope you have a speedy recovery too.

BB, special congrats to you on reaching target and even more so for the improvement in your health, that was so good to read! Look forward to having you join us in the maintainers when you feel you're ready. I really am so happy for you :D

Grannynise - BRILLIANT! First 2 stone off - you need to update your sig I think? ;)

LilacLillie, please post again soon let us know how you're doing. You were so upset the other night, bit worried about you hun.

Floozie, well done on staying the same. Are you taking on enough fuel for your body to be doing all this exercise? If not, your body may be clinging on for all it's worth to everything you put in. I got into problems with this a few months back as others here will know, but once I addressed it and got the balance right the weight started coming off nicely again.

Congrats to all the other losers and STS peeps, hugs to the gainers but many of you had brill losses the week before so it doesn't even out too badly!!!

QT - kcal is the number you need. It's short for kilocalories. Just to complicate things, "one calorie" as we know it, is actually not one calorie at all but one kilocalorie, i.e. one thousand calories!

This country is actually very good when it comes to food labelling, so look for the kcal value but be careful to measure it against the quantity/weight of the whole pack. A lot of them are made to look like small values but you'll see things like "kcal per 25g serving" when the packet is 300g or something!

What I've done is made a ready reckoner spreadsheet for myself, with the foods I eat most often, with the quantities I eat already worked out.

For a "good treat" I usually have a 30g serving of raisins. Nice and sweet, no preparation involved, and it counts towards the 5 a day. I buy the big 1kg bags rather than the pre-packaged snack boxes which are very overpriced.

Don't totallly cut out the things you love though, just look for the best alternatives. You can get a pack of baked crisps for under 100 cals, sweets can be weighed into smaller portions, some biscuits are better than others, etc :D
  • Phew...resisted the snickers and am now enjoying a subway sandwich...resisted their cookies too...

some good advice flying around the forum today....

In terns of food labelling another thing to look out for as a quick guide might be the new food labelling...does anyone here have a preference...traffic lights or percentages?

If you like to snack on chocolate there is NOTHING that can replace it -- so I limit the damage. I allow myself ONE funsize (buttons, crunchie etc) each day (counted as syns, points, calories, whatever you're doing) but save it until the evening. Then I know that if I want to eat chocoalate I've only got to wait rather than not have any at all. And many days by the time the evening comes I've changed my mind and I don't eat it.
  • QT,

Walkers french fries are under 100kcals....I think Jaffas cakes are also a reasonable biscuit choice

.....both!! The traffic lights draw your attention to the %ages.

Only the cals and sat fat matter really tho :D

Good q seren... I'm not fond of either method. I think it's too easy for the manufacturers to hide the true story. On things like ready meals, they can put "per half portion" to make everything look good, but many people will be eating a whole portion. They can load up on sugars and salts to make the fat content look healthier, etc. There are also good natural foods which may be high in calories but have excellent nutritional value, which could get passed over in favour of some packaged and processed junk full of artificial rubbish but showing up as a "green" traffic light...

I don't think there's any substitute for having the actual nutritional values and ingrediants listed out in full, and for people to receive solid education in what foods, cooking methods and so on are good for you and what are not. Not just in school, but with parents passing on healthy eating habits to their children right from when they are babies.

I could sidetrack from here, but I think I'll spare you all.... :D
  • Afternoon all you lovely peeps! Lots of new names which is fabulous, a (very!) belated welcome from me to add to all the others you've had!

QT - Walkers Quavers are also under 100 calories in a standard bag, and for a sweet hit I'm quite a fan of Pink'n'White wafers - most of the supermarket chains do them, usually in the biscuits aisl, so I'm usually okay when I go to put them in the trolley provided I keep my eyes shut going past all the other goodies! DH reckons he's going to buy me a set of blinkers like horses wear  - I won't tell you where I informed him he could insert that suggestion.........!!!:rotfl:

It's my WI with RC class tonight so will post again tomorrow with the results - a bit of a funny week this week so not quite sure what to expect to be honest.......

Congratulations :T to all those who have lost this week, hugs ((())) to those who need them, get well very soon to poorly bods - keep wrapped up warm, drink lots of fluids and make sure your respective other halves wait on you hand and foot ;)

    Lots of love

I'm going to the chinese for a meal tonight anyone any suggestions what I can eat that's not too bad?

I'm sure when I used to go to sw classes they used to say if you go for a chinese the best thing to have was something like plain boiled rice with chicken and mushrooms, avoid anthing that obviously been deep fried eg spring rolls and also avoid things in batter eg chicken balls.....mmmmmm yummmm, i want a chinese now :rotfl: :rotfl:

For the poster who mentioned treats, in the evening if i fancy it i have a cup of coffee and a pack of the mini jaffa cakes (152 kcals) you get 6 mini jaffa cakes inside each 'pod' and they're lovely but also enough to take the edge off the 'craving'. Also i'm sure other people have mentioned but kitkats (2 finger) are quite low and nice in the dark choc/mint/orange version. For crisps either walkers french fries (82kcals), golden wonder lights (98kcals) , weight watchers do crisps although personally i haven't found one of theirs i like yet)! Also the alpen bars with choc on the bottom are (124kcal) and very nice and my personal favourite the choc orange slimming world bar, if you know anyone who goes to the meetings?? They are my ultimate fav and only 119kcals!

Just got back from the gym did 20 mins on the treadmill in the 'fat burning' zone, 15 mins on the cycle and then some weights and then 'shock horror' i actually managed 5 mins on the cross trainer:eek: , i can never master the co-ordination on those things but i watched someone else today and decided to give it a go!

I have a friend coming for lunch today (also on a diet) which is nice! I'm going to toast some wholemeal pitta bread and do some veg and ww houmas yummmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!

Good luck to the rest of todays weighers:D
    Goal weight....lighter than when I started :D
