I'm using myfitnesspal (religously now!). It's food database is the best I've seen and has alot of UK stuff (often USA based). This speeds up the tedious process of tracking calories.

I'm looking for something that has a good UK food database but also allows you to track weight training (ie weight lifted per exercise) and produce progress reports from that. MFP does allow you track weight, but not graph progress
  • Hello, all, I have just spent the weekend reviewing/trying food diary apps and websites both free and paid and I thought I would share my feedback on your list.
my needs are carbs, fat, calories, exercise and a note adding feature.
I used myfitnesspal and found the database to be amazing, it barcode scanned several items in my larder and found them all, including ALDI brands. It did not allow me to add several foods to my favorites directly and that was a bit bothering. Your favorite lists get populated by repeated entry into your daily diary. available both online and smartphone is a plus.

I tried the cals&carbs (inspired by the book) smartphone app (no online available) . I found the app to be sketchy, your mileage may vary. It uses pictures of food on a plate to judge your portion and you can add your own.

I like the whole livestrong.com site and would choose it over paid sites unless your paid site fits your special needs. They have apps for all smart phones except android so I didn't try the app.

I liked the sparkpeople website because it is very customisable and scanned the only barcode I tried. It is an american site and that means lots of ads and things like Quorn Mince came up as Quorn grounds with only "serving" as a portion I had to guess at the grams (about 85); however, on most of their portions you can use fractions which is a plus. eg 1.33 servings.

I will come back later with the other 3 and thanks for the bumb anta, keeping a diary is one of the most important things we can do to move forward with a healthier livestyle, IMO

thanks, I almost forgot, graphs are great. I consider them an intermediate feature used once you find a site that works for you and you have been entering data for a few weeks. so I did not mention them in my quick reviews. I will revisit that later this week, cheers

Hi, I've been using xanderfit.co.uk (called BodyLog).

It's free and I would recommend it, I like it!

It's fairly new to the world, so the food database is small but it's all UK foods and clean with measurements and serving amounts, plus you add your own foods as and when you eat them if they don't already exist. It's got plenty of graphs and target setting, plus workout and progress tracking with graphs for those as well ... it's got a lot of detailed features in, but easy to use and there isn't a lot of navigation or clicking to get things done :)

Based on this post I joined myfitnesspal at the end of August and am finding it fantastic. Apart from anything else it's been a real eye-opener about what I was putting in my mouth and how I got to be overweight. I'm recommending it to everyone I know!
  • hello, again, to tell the truth I forgot which site I had posted this on. to continue I liked foodfocus it is free and if you use it there is a 'donate' button. It has the nice dashboard of charts and the food base seems great. I found 187 entries for 'chicken' and searching for some of the less common brand names found foods I use as well. No barcode scanner yet. No mobile app very nice website.

    purpleweightloss is no longer available.

futureself is another site that does some things well, but I see no reason to add it to my list of "probable sites to use" when there are so many other choices. Food database looks good and has UK foods. No barcode scanner, no mobile app.
  • I just had to bump this thread up after a conversation this afternoon with my dad. Both he and mum - both pensioners - are committed to losing some weight so I saw this thread and they both got stuck into it. They have been diligently logging their eating everyday and are doing really well. Mum complains that dad gets more calories per day but dad says he doesn't make a big thing of having his glass of wine at night - yeah, right!

Anyway, they have been logging their exercise but dad said that he couldn't find "making love" on the list. That was a bit too much information for me but then finished off by saying, "Would that be Hacky Sack then?"

Oh, the joys of old age ;)
  • I've been using Food Focus for a couple of years now. It's a very handy tool for weight management.

The last couple of days I've been experiencing some gremlins on the site - latest one this evening is, all my food data input is gone!

Anyone else still using it and experiencing problems? Perhaps it's time for me to try another (free) calorie tracking site?
