Weight loss the old style way part 2.

In contrast to yesterday I have had a brilliant day today. I've stuck to my plan and eaten:
Readybrek
slice toast (with HM bread) and grilled herby tomatoes
HM botham burger (Jamie Olivers) in a HM breadcake (Pan Amasado recipe)
Side salad
2 satsumas
I decided to think out my portion control and, instead of making just 4 burgers out of J O's recipe, I made 6 burgers and 10 meatballs. The extras have now been frozen for extra meals. Very pleased with myself as the reduced size burgers filled all of us.
Oh and thanks for the recipe for leek, chicken and sweet potato pie, was it Saver's - I'm looking forward to that one.AUGUST GROCERY CHALLENGE £110.19/ £250

I've joined slimming world, but I'm trying to do it the OS way - cheap and by cooking my own food from scratch.
Funny thing is, when the leader was holding up all the pasta packets of instant "free" pasta ready meals tonight, all I could think was "yuk, I couldn't eat that".
I'm really enjoying the cooking and trying new meals and different ways of doing things (I have a slow cooker now), and the bonus of all this lovely food is that I am 4 1/2 lbs lighter after two weeks.0 -
Pink-winged wrote: »Hi everyone,
I understand what many of you are saying about the flylady thread. I too don’t see it as more (or less) moneysaving than losing weight. They can both be moneysaving topics.
However, flylady, cleaning and decluttering are all topics that are specific to the Old Style board, whereas losing weight is not. There are already a number of lose weight threads available to everyone who uses MSE, but Old Stylers wanted one on this board and we have done our best to accommodate that.
One proviso was that the Lose Weight the Old Style way thread was to be specific to Old Style weight loss. Lately many posts have been drifting off the topic of losing weight. While we understand that it’s impossible not to chat a bit, what we are asking is that everyone tries their best to keep posts on the topic of losing weight with an Old Style slant.
As Gingham has already said, some people are being put off using the thread because they are having difficulty finding information amongst the chatty posts. So if anyone wants to chat about what’s going on in their life that is not related to OS weight loss, then the place to do that on Old Style is the daily thread where you’ll be given a warm welcome, or start a new thread in the MoneySavers Arms.
We really would appreciate your co-operation with this.
Thanks,
Pink
Is it not also about meeting the needs & requirements of the users and also further developing the community. Surely listening and responding to what will help the community is what this is also about.. why can everyone not benefit.. a new thread each month is hardly going to be restrictive is it? The old threads will fall to the lower pages and the current one be here.. in the same way the old thread has and this one has grown.
Flylady, cleaning and decluttering are the same to old style as from-scratch old style low fat/low cost meals, decluttering the body, mind and spirit and cleansing the life of 'dirty' habits. I personally couldn't differentiate.. they mean the same to me.. old style.. as in.. not new style..
As have one huge long thread that is daunting to read surely it would be more welcoming to new members if they only had 25 pages to read through each week/month as oppose to 215? We have accrued 11 pages in 4 days.. how many will there be in 2 weeks? (the old thread had 164 pages over 4 months 3269 posts in total!! THAT is too much.)
Would not even be possible to renew it each month.. we don't want anyone to feel left out.. but in 3000 posts time I think people might feel they are being. The thread should be about healthy, old style eating. That means recipes and meal plans, support and encouragement and healthy eating.
Does that not include being here to listen and offer support when a member isn't doing to well because they are having a hard time and need to offload? Surely you cannot expect them to go elsewhere for support when all the people who know how they normally are, are here? In order to do that people need to post.. maybe a tad off topic but so long as they get back on track.. which is where the support comes in.. what is the problem? I would say something like sticking together through thick and thin but it may come across as a pun!
That is like saying you can only stay here if you are losing weight regularly.
While I do see in theory what you are saying.. if the 'rules' can be made flexible that is working within a community and meeting needs.
the thread on the other board isn't old style.. it is about fads and clubs and ready meals!.. so inappropriate for our needswishes and circumstamces.
That kept my mind off the hula hoops for another 10 minutes.. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Frogga.. I'm a crisp fiend too!

Well I'm probably going to get shot at dawn for daring to post more than once in a day but eh.
This is obviously an immensely popular thread, both from the participants and those that view it. I honestly don't see it going off topic on its OSness much even if it does increase in size rapidly ( forgive the pun ) and it hasn't one tenth the extraneous waffle I've seen on threads on other areas of the site. Losing weight and healthier eating OS style is not just an issue for those on these boards, if you've been watching the TV/reading the papers/listening to the radio the last year or so it is a HUGE global issue - with even governments now realising they have to make moves towards helping people make informed choices about their food intake, cut down on the amount of processed food eaten and foodwaste/miles as a result, and encouraging people to relearn cooking skills. It's back to basics for everyone !
So no wonder people need and want a thread like this. Its so important to have strong peer support if you are fighting the eating war, and especially if you want to dump the weightloss clubs and the " slimming " foods and go back to what previous generations used to do - cook your own meals, don't act as a human waste disposal unit with eyes being bigger than your belly until the roles are sadly reversed, and get up off your bums and walk/clean/garden etc. There may be people who are put off by the " unwieldy" size of the thread and the " chatty " bits but there are just as many people now getting stressed out and confused by what we should and shouldn't be posting and are equally getting put off.
Anyway. The other reason for this post : I've been having a chat with another poster in PM about healthy snacking, I'm sure Ive posted similar before but just thought it might be useful to share here again a sort of list of things I personally try to keep in the house or take to work to replace the unhealthy snacks, and sometimes act as an impromptu meal if time or circumstances don't permit a " proper " one. I also find although it may seem a bit twee, small tupperware containers are invaluable for portable portion control - that way the handful of xyz stays a handful and not " O well I may as well just chuck the rest of this packet in my bag... "
Ricecakes. Big or mini but I'm not a fan of flavoured ones like Snackajacks ( altho I like the Kallo marmite ones sometimes ). Along with oatcakes these are two of my big standbys either on their own or with toppings/dips/fruit/salad etc.
Pumpkin seeds/sunflower seeds. Either plain, with a little sea salt or sometimes I get the flavoured Munchy seeds types. Its not that hard to make your own flavoured or spiced ones, I'll dig out some recipes some time.
Nuts - the less messed about with the better but even small amounts of good old roasted peanuts or cashews are better than digging into packets of crisps.
Dried fruit. I particularly love raisins - sometimes they can help me avert a chocolate binge. Careful checking of the packaging is needed, some dried fruits contain a lot of added sugar/oil as preservative etc.
Fresh fruit in season. I also add apples to a lot of salads and sandwiches etc !
Muesli - not just for eating with milk etc - I find a spoonful on some plain yoghurt is a filling snack.
Quark/Cottage cheese/edam/reduced fat hard cheese. as a topping for rice cakes and oatcakes etc or with fruit.
Raw veggies and a bit of salad dressing But don't force yourself to eat things you don't like... I don't enjoy raw peppers so wouldn't take them. But I love cucumber, radishes, celery, carrot, tomatoes, spring onions, cauliflower, courgette, broccoli... etc. Gives you a good bit of " chew ", variety in colour/flavour/vitamins etc.
Humous... oh yes indeedy ! We loves it we do, the preciousss ! Madly enough, especially with wedges of a nice crisp apple dipped in. Cheap to buy, cheap to make your own too and you don't *have* to use tahini.
Home made soup. I cannot emphasise enough how damn easy it is to make decent hm soup. B*gger the cup a soups and the tins ! or if in a rush, Swiss Marigold bouillon powder makes a quick tasty savoury hot drink on its own.
Peanut butter. Again, not in " half a jar " quantities but quick tasty and filling and you can keep it in your desk or a bag for dipping and spreading.
Leftovers. Better half a dozen cold leftover hm potato wedges than a bag of Monster Munch !
Hm coleslaw. Again, not the type that is 9/10ths dodgy looking gloop with a few sad shreds of veg in it. I shred up a box of cabbage and carrot, pop it in the fridge, keeps for 4-5 days ready to be mixed in with whatever dressings I fancy. I usually use low fat mayo and/or low fat yoghurt as a base, adding a little mustard, herbs, cider vinegar, lemon juice, whatever I have on hand or feel like, and sometimes I'll chop it a bit finer and use a vinaigrette dressing. I usually put in raisins and apple and very little onion addition, just enough to give it a bit of a kick. Again, a small bowl of hm coleslaw takes a bit of chewing and takes a while to eat which helps with the snack cravings.
Ok I think I've bored you all enough now !:p" Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams.. "~ November 8th 2008. Now totally DEBT FREE !~0 -
evening all, had my weigh in and have lost 1 and a half pounds:j :j :j am nearly there now! 1 pound to go! The last few pounds have been so hard to shift but thanks to everyone here I'm getting there!:T
Just had my tea of HM veggie lasagne and HM wedges - Cranky40 - I'm a fellow SW member trying to do as you do, I just need the structure of a weekly weigh in to keep me on track and I also avoid all the instant noodle/pasta and sauce stuff and try and make my own version. Once I get to target it is free to go so i can save the money towards a treat for myself, I have my eye on a panasonic BM;)
I am at work on an early tomorrow so have got some HM lentil and tomato soup out of the freezer and a seeded roll to take. Will have porridge at work for brekky. Tea is Quorn sausages, SW chips and peas.
Good luck all x
edited to say thanks for some great ideas Kitty!:TDo what you love :happyhear0 -
fantastic ideas there kitty.. thankyou for sharing.. I am definitely in need fo other ideas for 'snacks' because I graze constantly.. I'll definitely be trying a few of those.
My HM soups are always really bland and inedible.. any ideas?
Taplady.. well done!!! you have done so well.. now.. will you do my body next please ??LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Evening one and all
Firstly :j and :T taplady.... I am so thrilled for you..so close now just 1 itty bitty pound to go -you are an inspiration
ok ok :T :T :T :T to Pigpen and Kittyscarlett for putting into words what im sure many of us are thinking...
The only thing i can add about the "chat" element of this thread , is to say that .... when someone is trying to lose weight, a chat on here may be all that is stopping them from diving head first into the fridge ... a bad day at work, kids playing up OH being a pain or just feeling low -whatever the reason -coming on here and letting off steam with other lovely people who understand has probably saved all of us at one time or another from over eating !!!! Just knowing there is someone on the other end of the PC makes so much difference:D
Anyway moving on.... Had a lovely chicken salad with potatoes for dinner... the rest of the chicken and carcass has gone to make a huge batch of chicken and sweetcorn soup for hubby..
Also made a batch of cream of broccoli and a vat of spicy goulash soup -that was done in the SC... so that is hubbies lunches for the next 3 weeks :T along with some HM rolls made by hand -which saves even more pennies - the cobs are working out at 2p each :T
Tomorrow im going to scrub the house from top to bottom - my exercise for the day..and without the gym membership fee :j
well folks i hope everyone is well and doing ok ..if anyone ever needs a chat please fell free to PM me..im usually lurking near the PC
have a good evening everyone and keep up the good work-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
Hi Folks - especially all the diehard-determined-dieting-damsels - and for saversarn - Yo! Sex Goddess (that's the first and only time -:rotfl: but I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did:eek: )Dear Ladies/Girls/Vixens/Women/Amphibians/ etc (always wary of how to approach that bit :embarasse )
I love reading your thread. I just sit quietly in the background and enjoy, learning and looking.
A couple of things sprang to mind this evening and I just wanted to say:
Gingham Ribbon - I understand you have a job to do, and that you give generously of your own time, but I can't see the harm in people posting multiple times if they need to. This thread is such a fantastic tool for people.
I realise that it might look like it deviates from Money Saving Old Style at times, but I really don't think so. This thread takes the place of expensive slimming clubs/programmes, therapy, diet pills, surgery, mad diet products etc etc - that IS saving money. The advice and support folks get here is invaluable. So many people can't afford the things I have mentioned above (diet clubs etc - and who wants to line Rosemary Conley's or any other overpaid celebrity's pocket when the real advice and support is here, free) and like me have found their way here because they found this site due to the need to get out of debt or save money. Some people are isolated/lonely and really need the human contact and support a thread like this gives and if posting stops a binge - post on... (just my opinion, no offence intended)
Cheers - Orph
Now I realise that it's naff to quote yourself (onesself??) However, the point is that the moderators seem to want the thread to behave in a certain way, but the thread doesn't/won't/can't!
I agree with pigpen's last two posts, as well as comments from lil_me, kittyscarlett, and cheerfulnes4.:T
This IS a money saving thread. It IS, IS, IS! The moderators comments suggest that by posting a couple of times a day and being 'chatty' rather than relentlessly posting recipes and money saving tips, the posters are steering the thread away from being money saving old style. NO - NOT in my opinion. These regular posts are just taking the place of what dieters would do if they were on a costly programme. By providing that service here MSE is saving people THOUSANDS. £££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££
On this website it is possible to post an enquiry to a thread asking how best to clean one's net curtains after Great Aunt Agnes has vomitted sherry all over them. Often the answer is Stardrops or white wine vinegar, which is great - but the advice is - to go and purchase something. (£) That is not always the case here on this thread - often what is achieved by a post is FREE advice/support/comfort/comradeship etc - this is what is paid (£) for on diet programmes/clubs etc - surely the reason the thread was set up in the first place? Please can someone explain to me the difference?
I realise that the moderators get pressure from people disliking the thread for its volume of posts - but if everyone who loves the thread and NEEDS IT pm'd you on a regular basis, your computers would be very bloated - then you really would need weight loss advice!
As Gingham Ribbon states - There have been fewer than 200 posts on here but over 3 and a half THOUSAND views - Who can judge the benefit these non-posting viewers get from the posts on here? If the levels remain as high, you certainly can't ascertain that their experience is a negative one, otherwise they won't keep viewing!? I watched this thread for months without posting and gained serious support and advice, just from lurking in the background.
However, now I'm here, I want it to stay and stay the same.
I've tried other stuff, - I watched my mother on WW for 20 years - thats a great recommendation ( - not) and my sister has been doing SW for 5 years - to lose 2 stone and not made it - not a great recommendation, I've tried allsorts including OA - but this works for people and saves money..so what's the problem?
Apologies for the long post, hope I don't get slapped:o .
Thanks - OrphDFW Nerd # 768 - PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTS :cool:0 -
Hooray! I seem to be losing a quarter of a pound each day - since last Thursday! And half a stone lighter than early in December! I'm still treating the porridge as nasty medicine, but hey it seems to be working. Somewhere on here I found a thread with different ways to make it - must check that out again. Lunch was a HM tuna salad wrap (no Mayo so a bit dry and chewy I must admit). Supper was a curry, with very little fat used. And of course the fruit snacks all day. Trouble is lunches like
today's take me longer to do so I was a bit later leaving than I usually am.
Oh and this is definitely helping me save money to throw at my debts because I am buying no sweets, biscuits, crisps etc. and am probably buying less bread too!Resolution:
Think twice before spending anything!0 -
Orpheus.. if anyone tries to slap you.. you have a bunch of us standing right in front so they'll have to get through us first.. and I've got a mincing machine!! .. makes low fat burgers with lean meat or veggies.. pnaarrr!! bind it together with eggies adn they seem to hang together pretty well.
I think the other threads that have a rolling weekly/monthly renewal should be reconsidered if this is not a money saving thread.. !!!!!! is the knitters MONTHLY!! thread?? it costs a fortune to knit a garment.. way more expensive that a bought item.. believe me, I LOVE knitting but simply cannot afford the materials.. where is that cheap and money saving?
BTW Orpheus.. LOVED the comment re great aunt Agnes..
