  • Without any research i would guess that dried fruit would be cheaper at the big supermarkets (ie tesco/asda value/smartprice) and nuts would be cheaper at aldi/lidl. They tend to do quite large bags of different types of nuts for a £1/£2.

    Flour and sugar are similar prices in all of the shops i think.

    Cant remember what the site is - mysupermarket.co.uk that allows you compare all the prices. Worth a look to check which is cheaper, and then you can plan your shopping around the stores, providing it doesn't cost much more journey-wise!

    Sorry if that post doesnt make any sense, finding it hard to formulate sentences today!

    mhe...fill flask with boiling water, heat milk( bit less than your flask will hold)until tiny bubbles appear round edge, stir in tablespoon natural yogurt and tablespoon of dried milk ( not necessary but I like the texture) empty water from flask and pour in milk mixture, close and leave for minimum 12 hours, decant and store in fridge. Fruit and flavourings can be added to taste.

    Boo...forgive me for the fact that I never consider that there may be anything that someone may not like...have been overweight all my life as I have yet to find ( at 62!) something that I do not like to eat...some I prefer to others but will eat anything...omigod that sounds gross! You will, of course have to operate within your own preferences, in which case unless you absolutely do not have more than £15 to spend, I would advise that you are a little kinder to yourself and spend a little more on the fruit you like, but make your soups as there is no comparison in either taste or price.

    Thats ok meanmarie, I call myself a fussy foodie. I love lots of kinds of food but there are still plenty im not keen on either. Fruit is my main thing. I love fruit flavoured stuff and fruit with things but on its own I just dont like it, weird I know.
  • Hi All,

    Another cold, grey and windy day here. We've been out for a walk to the shop to get some freshly baked bread but that's all the exercise for the day. A big fat baguette costs 80 cents and they are straight from the oven. We don't have an oven so I can't bake my own.

    I was up early to write my article but went back to bed for an hour afterwards. Since our walk and lunch I've been curled up in the armchair with a book. I have also been surfing the net looking for ideas for making babyfood when stepdaughter is here with her baby later this week. I want to show her how easy home cooking is as she has just moved into a house of her own and her budget is very tight.

    Food today has been:

    Breakfast: Muesli, raisins, skimmed milk, pineapple juice.
    Lunch: One third of a baguette with a bowl of tomato soup. Rest of yesterday's homemade fruit salad.
    Tea: Chicken breasts cooked with onions, mushrooms and carrots in gravy with mashed potatoes. I should be able to save a bit to blend and put in the freezer for baby I think. Yoghurt.
    Snack: Orange.

    OK thanks for that Meanmarie and Squeaky - i feel a batch of homemade yogurt coming on for a cheap halfterm treat. I havent got any natural yog - could i use a fruit one or is that a def no no?

    Hi all. I tried to weigh in on friday but my scales were being a PIA so dependant on where i place my feet I've either lost a pound, stayed the same or put one on! B***dy useless things! So next time I'm in town I'll jump on the super scales in boots and see what they have to say. I haven't been eatting particualrly healthily over the weekend but I have managed not to totally pig out on what I have had so thats something at least. I've got to have three fillings tomorrow _pale_ so food will probably be anything mushy :rotfl:

    So far today I have had...
    B: Porridge with rasins (found a bag hiding at the back of the cupboard :T Still haven't got more sutanas and maple syrup) and half a teaspoon on honey.
    L: Chicken and garlic mayo (low fat) wrap and a tiny tiny slice of cheesecake.

    No idea what dinner will be until I investigate the freezer.

    Boo - You're not that weird. I'm like it with veg. I'll eat them in stuff like soups and sauces etc but theres very few I like just as they are. And I'm allergic to a lot of them!
    I used to survive off about £20 a week on my own when I was at uni and that was including meat so it is doable.
    -Buy big family packs (often cheaper), portion up and freeze into individual size.
    -Cook things like stews, soups, curries in big batches and again portion up and freeze (also good when you can't be bothered to cook something as you can just stick in the microwave/oven).
    -Go for big flavours as you'll need less to feel satisfied (good for weight loss and the budget :D )
    -Buy big bags of pasta, rice, couscous etc as they'll last ages and if you run out of money for the week they can always be thrown in with some stock or stick some cheese on top for a cheap and easy meal.
    -Oh and I used to let myself have one 'luxury' item a week (your smoothies maybe). Something you'll enjoy but can't afford to have as an everyday item.
    Hope thats some help.

    Right, I am going to take my poi into the garden whilst the sun is still shining and see if I can still do them! Good workout for the arms but I shall probably return with a black eye!

    Still aiming for 11st 7 by the end of the month.. 11st 9 on Saturday.. I CAN do this.. I WILL do this.. I won't make the 7lb by valentines day thoguh.. but I have got as far as 4lb.. I guess I could cut my hair and my toenails and have a big poop.. PMSL...

    Thanks for all the support guys. Im feeling quite good today and enthused by your ideas so im going to cook some soup in the slow cooker overnight. Ive got brocolli, onion, green beans, courgette, celeriac, butter beans, chicken stock, mushrooms, yellow pepper, swede, tinned toms and lentils all begging to be used so im just going to sling lots of things in and see what happens really! :rolleyes:

    Im also going to make the mackerel pate and give that a try for tomorrows lunch. Ive cut down how much ive eaten today and im not hungry actually so im quite proud of myself overall. I havent actually thought about what im having for tea yet but im not feeling as hungry as I usually would be by this time because I planned a snack into my routine.

    Feeling happy, hope my questions and the advice ive been given today has helped others too :T

    Im going to trawl the freezer and the cupboards for things to use before I go shopping this week and see whether I can make some things last longer for starters. At the weekend ill try and get a vacuum flask somewhere and some more plastic containers for soup too.
  • Boo - theres no reason soup has to be expensive, I tend to make a pot at the end of the week when there are only bits of veg left, not enough to make proper meals with. Last week I used up a small portion of spinach, half a broccolli, quarter green pepper, quarter red pepper, 4 shallots, 1 onion, 4 carrots, 1 leek and a few potatoes. None of these could be used for a meal as there was not enough and they'd have gone off if left. Combined with some stock and lots of dried herbs its a great way of using up stuff that would end up in the bin.

    As for labour intensive, maybe you are too merticulous. As it will all be souped I am sometimes very haphazard. I don't always peel things like carrots, just quickly chop it all up and allow to simmer.

    Anyway, week 1 of diet over, I have lost...........

    Yes, I am pleased!

    I know its week 1 and I can't expect loss like this every week but its a great boost.

    Aim this week is 2lb.

    Todays food was/is:

    B. - 1 x shredded wheat with semi skimmed

    L. - vegetable stir-fry

    D. - Pesto crunchy chicken, sweet potatoe spicy wedges, stir-fry veg portion.

    S. - fruit, maybe a few choccies to celebrate a very good start.
