I have got xbmc installed fine, but I am struggling on how to stream to it from my PC. Can anyone give me an idiot guide to doing this?
I found this http://thehardsell.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/xbmc-making-it-sing-2/ very helpful when setting up network shares..but I run Vista.
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

and the xbox shares thing sounds like possible subnet or firewall problems. few things to check... does your xbox, pc and router all use a 192.168.X.Y ip where only the Y varies? have you disabled the firewall on the pc / router? does the router have any port type rules that may be blocking stuff?

    >> Can I just stick everything from one case into the other?

depends which version. if they're both 1.6s then very likely, yes. if not, then things like the cd and hd drive casing may be slightly different with different mounting holes etc on both. the best thing to do would be treat the drives as box dependent and leave them be, and just switch the mobo and psu around. you could probably leave the psu alone too if you really wanted to.

ah just remembered... as far as Xbox Live goes, the mobo and hard drive need to remain paired as they get their serial nums or something recorded when it's first connected to live, and they chuck you off live if you connect again and they're different. don't see any problem if you're just modding them though.

i'd say just take the mobo, psu and HD from the black box and stick it in the crystal, hopefully should work fine.

Pepsi, I have one I used on a 1.6, it has the SC files on it but I can put the others on it if you need them. PM me if you want it.;)

Also, a friend gave me his old duff xbox for spares (either the hard drive or the motherboard is stuffed) and its a crystal. Can I just stick everything from one case into the other? Also, the CD drive in the duff box is a philips 6035/21 which apparently reads media better than the thompson drive in my working one. So if I switched everything from one box to the other, could I switch the two drives?

in theory yes but be wary moving a 1.6 board to an older case.M$ changed the design slighlty and there is a mount in the centre of the case that would short the board.
compare the 2 cases and remove the offending mount

only if its been on live before.if its a virgin box then just upgrade the HD before ever going on live

Here are some links I found helpful when trying network shares

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/523607

The afterdawn one was most useful for my router based setup with MCE+XP Pro. I had tried in the past, but XBMC has given me a real reason to make it work. Besides file access adding an old 106 pioneer drive to the network share gives read all capability.

I also found this great, I could only get the xbox to browse my public folders before reding this!

following on from what others have said, this page gives a few more details about psu compatibility (basically, 1.6 psus aren't compatible with non-1.6 boards):

thanks for everyone's help. Got the xbox to read the shared folder within 2 mins after reading those links and am happily browsing the version links now.

Only problem I have now is that the sky netgear router is utter c*@p. I'm plucking up the courage to flash it to get my passwords / update the firmware. Has anyone done this?

Sorry about this guys as this is probably Sooooo basic but...

I connected my softmodded Xbox to my PC using a crossover cable. Loaded up CuteFTP on the PC, entered the ip address of my Xbox when requested, used xbox as the password but couldn't connect to the xbox. It appeared as if nothing was connected. Any ideas or links to help?

    Cheers
  • what ip is your xbox using, and how is it getting this ip? if you're just using a single crossover then you probably need to set static ips and subnets on both the xbox and pc. have you done this? if not, set your pc as ip: 192.168.1.2 sub: 255.255.255.0 (see here if you dont know how) and xbox 192.168.1.3 with same subnet (i've no idea how just yet...).
