To be honest, I'm not too bothered what is in there, unless it is going to stop me modding it. :D I haven't actually tried redoing the softmod since I got it working properly on the other one without action replay.

And I just noticed Xbox 2 needs a replacement power cable too, hope it takes me less than two hours this time. :D
  • random, what version xbox have you used the xplorer guide with?
    http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=628431

it says it may not work with 1.6 (suprise suprise...) and that's all i have for the next couple weeks :(
  • I used a USB memory stick and a home made adaptor to mod my 1.6b Xbox.

I think mine is an earlier version, I've got one 2002 and one 2003. I'd just give it a go anyway, if it reads the usb stick, then surely it will work? I put the stick into the Xbox, let it format it, then put it in the pc.

Tried the mod again on Xbox 1, now I've figured how to get the files over without corrupting them :D and it worked up to a point ... I can get into the softmod, install it all, but when I reboot to get to the shadow c, I just get a black screen. It reboots every time to a black screen until I put the game back in and remove the softmod.
  • woohoo... thanks to my dad's crazy collection i now have 6 memory sticks (2 identicle, 2 disgo, 2 pny), an external usb HD, a USB MP3 player and various usb cameras. even with my luck one of them has got to work... though a lot of the sticks are a little too close to the non-working ones on the list :( now just have to wait til tomorrow to pick up a "package" from the post office... hopefully my xbox > usb cables :D my xbox is shaking in it's rubber boots i hope... :j

Good luck, hopefully one of them will work! I looked at that list, the Kingston Datatravelers appear on both the working and non working lists! :D Worked fine for me though.

I finally have two working media centre Xboxes! Number 1 did have either a chip or a new bios, but was missing an alternate dashboard. I discovered I could ftp in if I went into the softmod menu without actually installing it, and ftped in a new dashboard. :)
  • I use a crappy generic memory stick and it worked fine. I'm after two more xbox aswell now though.
  • apparently tesco and asda may have some old stock in store if you ask, £25.99 and 22.99 i think... otherwise ebay's always good.
  • do any of you guys have proper RGBs scart cables for the xbox? if so, could any of you confirm what i've put in this post: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=637753&st=0&gopid=4199836&#entry4199836

basically i'm getting *very* little quality difference between CVBS (composite) and RGBs cables, though frankly probably because CVBS is so good... only difference i've seen is the DVD playback OSD ("Section Unavailable" etc. text) is a lot greener with RGBs than with CVBS (in which it's practically yellow). Everything I've tested so far tells me it's really outputting RGBs though (scart pinout, tv behaviour), only thing I've not checked is the xbox end connecter pinout (which needs 3 pins shorted to enable RGBs).

I've opened my 1.1 once again and thought I'd check the under side of the PSU this time to make doubly sure. Even though it's a Delta there is some fatigue in 3 of the 4 the solder joints left to right as you can see below (click to enlarge).
    deltapsujointfatigueso5.th.jpg

What I thought were rivets are just studs which are soldered on the underside and as the socket is half hanging off the end of the PCB there is some play.

It was some way off being a problem, but I've de-soldered and re-soldered it for now.

Also I've had a bit of a result with my Mk1 Phillips DVD-ROM after stripping it down and cleaning the lens and mirror it now actually reads about 80% of my DVD media rather than just two obsolete types unreliably.

I have to say the console was generally filthy I could of sowed potatoes in dirt coating the cooling fan
