Original XBox as a media player

Xbox 2 is now sorted! Well, I've added the new dash at least, I'll have a go at the media centre tomorrow. It was Action Replay corrupting the save, I found a step by step guide to using Xplorer360, and it worked first time!0

Not as glad as I was, after buying 2 Xboxes, 2 splintercells, a cable and a compatible usb device, I was starting to think I'd never get there
Xplorer360 is pretty simple to use once you find the instructions, less messing around than setting up Action Replay.
Anyone out there know anything at all about Xbox 1's chip? I really don't know what's best to do with that one, if I try to run the softmod anyway, am I going to damage it? I can't see any difference between the two boxes except that startup screen?
P.s., I've got the media centre on Box 2 now, I've been listening to BBC radio, watching Youtube clips, and uploading my cd plays to Last FM.I've also got tv guide, and the weather set up.
I'm very pleased with it.
Just wondering, should I connect up a usb keyboard, does it just work without any messing about?0 -

should do under linux, and so long as it works it should do so straight away, normal linux hotplug functionality, but there are some keyboards / mice that just dont work for whatever reason. and you should find that any special hotkeys either dont work or have basic functionality as they're driver dependent. just stick it in already and find outand add it to the list either way: http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/USB_Keyboard_and_Mouse_Support
and... where are you all getting your xploder and actionreplay software from? any push in the right direction appreciated
EDIT: pretty much what i was looking for... http://www.hackosis.com/index.php/2007/09/24/xbox-make-your-own-action-replay-device/0 -
Thanks, I'll see if I can borrow a usb keyboard just to see if it is easier than using the keypad or remote.
I personally had a lot of trouble with Action Replay corrupting the save file. I added it to the usb thing several times, so it must have done the same each time. Xplorer360 on the other hand worked perfectly, and is a much smaller program too.0 -
I'm sure I read somewhere that if you have a chipped/softmodded box already that you can ftp the required files onto that one and then transfer them directly to the memory card, so you can softmod another machine, thus eliminating the need for action replay. Is my memory correct on this? Can someone please confirm that this is possible?

@ Random, where's this guide you used for xploder360? i've found loads of links to download it but don't have a clue how to use it0

you have no need to softmod a chipped box.your just doing what the chip already does.
changes the bios on boot to allow other software to run.
dont confuse the chip with running software.
all the chip does is change the bios.then you add the software.
with just a chip it will run copy games but needs XBMC etc to do media stuff.0 -

It really is so simple when you know how, I was kicking myself
I had changed the driver on my usb device to the action replay one, I had to change it back to the standard windows usb driver to make it copy files to it.0 -

But I can't see how to actually add the software. I can't seem to boot into any kind of different dash, and I can't ftp into the box.
Someone did say that it may be a very basic chip just to enable it to play dvd-rs.
I can't access Live using this box, while I can with the same setup on box2, so something is different in there!0 -
could be a live blocking bios flash.
only way to know for sure is open her up really.
some chips have a light you can see looking in the dvd side air vent on the side of the console0
