Hello congrats on posting here - have you thought of having webcam installed at your's and your GF's homes? Just a little thought - when you can't physically be with each other you can at least see each other instead.
    Good luck

PS: have you thought about carshare into work? There's quite a few websites around to join you up with someone in your area - doesn't have to be someone from the same firm as you....

Also, I have just opened up a new LLyods TSB account.
As more than £1000 a month is going into it, they will pay me 4.5% interest. thats an extra £45 a month!

They also have a save the change option, they will round up all my buys on a debit card to the nearest pound, and put the change into my savings account.

So if i spend £14.50 on somthing i will pay £15 on my card and 0.50p of that goes into saving, it all sounds good.

    Hi deehill

Well done for all the changes you're going to make - that's fantastic. :) Do continue to post.

Re your Lloyds account - not quite! 4.5% is a yearly interest rate. So *if* you maintain £1000 in the account ALL year, you'd get £45 - and then you'd be taxed on it.

Much of your £1000 a month will be going in and out to pay bills etc, so your 4.5% interest will apply either daily or monthly, then be subject to tax, and will therefore be much, much lower and over a year. Sorry to have to tell you that!

Make sure any savings go in the highest savings account possible - the Savings tab at the top will tell you the current highest paying account. :)

V best of luck, mate. :)

    Hi All,

I have taken on board alot of these suggestions.

    MY next actions will be;

Cutting phone bill by at least half - saving £50
Seeing my girlfriend 3 times a month - saving £160
Cutting food down by buying from supermarkets/making at home - saving hopefully £60

Moving to a further away carpark saving £50

Total saving so far - £320

If i put £350 a month into the dept for now that will get me on the right road, and then i need to find a 2nd job possibly.

I could sell my old tv for like £100

I have a citroen C4 Coupe which is now worth £5,000 as i have done 60,000 miles in it.

I have just found out i am getting a company van, it costs £50 in tax a month but i save in the long run.

So because of this, i will most likely sell my car.

Still, I am really scared that i owe £5,000 and after i have looked at the figures that i am going to be in dept for a good couple of years :S

I have to thank a good few of you who posted long posts and everyone here has helped. I will continue to post and ask for advice (if this is ok?)

Please continue to post in here if you can think of more ideas to help...

    :)

Sell your car, if you can get £5k then you have paid your debt off.

You may still be in debt for a few more years but you will prob get pay rises or even a better paying one.

Once you have paid off Paypal, Ebay & the bank and gotten your cc within its limit you will be better off

Paying £350 off a month would mean you are debt free in 14/15 months if you sort it all out with your creditors & they don't add charges.

Well done on making the changes.

2 years is nothing when you are 19 and if it gives you a financial grounding for the rest of your life, trust me, the sacrifices now will be worth their weight in gold. I wish this site had been around when I was 19 - unfortunately it was all daisy wheel printers and green and black screens back then!!!

Okay, I know that you're young and in love, and long-distance relationships suck, but you have to be practical. You simply cannot afford this kind of outlay on your current income. I live overseas from my family, and would LOVE to see them, but just can't afford it at the moment.

Can I be nosy, and ask how long you have been together? If it is still early days, the urge to spend all your time with someone can be overpowering ...

I would echo what other posters have said, about looking for cheaper accommodation when you visit, and cutting them back to twice a month or less. That may seem tough, but you have more options available for keeping in touch than I did when I was your age and in a long-distance relationship.

Why not make regular 'dates' to chat via messenger? You can have some really saucy conversations - trust me, it can really add something to your relationship ;)

And this has probably been mentioned before, but if you think this is that serious, have you considered moving? How much longer does she have before she finishes her course? I would only consider moving, though, if you really believe this is long-term.

I would say only move once she has finished her degree & has a job so all bills are split. At present I really don't think you can afford a place o yur own.

Also can you be sure this will last (I know you can't tell, young love does last etc) but you don't want to be moving & then finding you no-longer get on. How long have you been together? I take it you went to the same uni?
