Paypal investigating me

2 days ago I sold an item (expensive set of DVDs) on ebay for £87, with p&p of £10 on top.
I was over the moon that it had reached that much :j

The person that won paid by paypal straight away and asked me to leave feedback. I said I would leave feedback when he had received the item safely and let me know all was well. He got angry at this and said I was being unethical and demanded I either left feedback straight away or refund his money. I advised that this was quite common practice on ebay to wait to leave feedback and sent his item.

He has now got paypal to investigate me and get his money back. I am really upset by this - I have 100% feedback of 137, have never had any problems and I dont think I have done anything wrong here.

I have responded to paypal with all the facts but he had an unconfimed addrress as he was a new user so not sure where I stand.
If they do give him his money back where to I stand? Not only will he have had £100's of DVD's for free, I will also be out of pocket what with paying all the listing fees, paypal costs and postage.

What should I do about that? If he does get his money back, can I take him to small claims court?

Please help...... I am devastated about this as I am truly an honest person.

The buyer is being dishonest if he is claiming non receipt yet has got the items. However, and this is a big however, the only way you can prevent the chargeback proceeding is to prove delivery by giving the special delivery tracking number. If you didn't send it special delivery then paypal will find against you.

One thing you can do though is counter claim against the buyer through ebay for feedback extortion. Send copies of his emails, together with headers to ebay via the contact us/report system.

If you did not use special delivery then the only way to get the money back again will be via the small claims court. However this would be difficult again unless you can prove delivery of the DVDs. If you went to small claims with no proof of delivery it would just be your word against his.

Please post his e-bay name here so we can all avoid him.
:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:
  • Also depends what he is claiming for.
Can't see it being for a case of non-feedback.
Also to soon to say goods not arrived.
If goods not as described they will have to be sent back to you first if the case goes against you before they refund the money to him.
You can also file a item not paid for in ebay to get final value fee back and then you an relist it for free (make sure to do this within 45 days)
One thing though is that they can take ages to deal with claims!!!
    Cheers

    Thanks guys.

The buyer in question has emailed me to ask why I requested his contact details from ebay. I explained that I wanted them in case it had to go further (ie small claims). His response was:

"Yes there is a paypal issue.
Someone paid me without cleared funds. I spent what i'd been paid. I'm working with paypal to work this out. Do not refund my money under any circumstance, i'm getting it sorted. Thanks"

I didnt think he could pay me without having cleared funds in his account? Is he lying to me? Its not like I get a choice as to whether or not I refund him, paypal decide that. Should I just wait for paypal to deal with it?

Also, what other forms of instant payment could I use instead of paypal? Have been using paypal since they first arrived on ebay but didnt realise it would be this easy for someone to rip me off

  • Eggpay or Nochex are the alternatives, my limited research into each has shown Nochex to be cheaper¹ easier² and much more secure³, and Eggpay to be free (and thats all I know about that!).

    ¹by about 1%

²no signup required to send money

³will not take money away from you they've already given you unless they suspect you of trying to exploit their site.

Still, Eggpay's free, so worth researching too

Paypal can be a nightmare at times, as has been spoken about numerous times on these threads. For instance if someone pays for an item using a stolen credit card..guess who Paypal come after for the money? YOU the innocent seller!! Short of not using Paypal at all on your listings it's becoming a tiring nuisance to try and apply all the filters to weed out scammers, the only piece of advice I could offer is to in future mention on your listings that you will only deliver to CONFIRMED Paypal addresses as sending to an unconfirmed address offers no protection at all.
Your buyer sounds like a nightmare or just a totally incompetent newbie at best...forward to Paypal AND ebay his feedback requests too..as this is against ebays policies and could get him a warning on his account, but you'll just have to persevere with Paypal and stand your ground however frustrating it gets. Good luck, be interested to see how this develops.

Only if as a seller you don't know what is in the terms and conditions when you 'sign them'.

    Hiya

    I emailed paypal the following:
"I have not been given a reason why you are holding my money? Please can you let me know asap?"

They replied saying "thanks for the information, please contact us if we can be of further assistance."

I emailed back and said.... yes you can be of further assistance, please answer my question.

    They said:
"We appreciate your patience and understanding regarding this matter.
Your details are currently in a queue to be reviewed by agent and you
will be contacted in due course."

I only want to know what grounds he is claiming his money back but they wont tell me - surely this is not fair?!
