There are not many companies that will supply new service without wanting a minimum term commitment as the set up costs need to be recovered over the term , things like the installation, router supply are basically paid back over the minimum term , no minimum term expect to pay £100+ upfront to cover those cists , if you can find a company that doesn’t want at least a 12 month minimum term , and it follows the longer the commitment the better the price …a few big brands do 12 month minimum terms as well as 24 months , for example a broadband 150Mb with PAYG phone is £31 24 month minimum terms, or £36 (£5 more) on a 12 month term with BT , others may be cheaper but may not do 12 months (DYOR) , but that’s still cheaper than the current out of contract price with the existing provider.

As far as any alarm etc , you need to check with the provider of it if it’s compatible with IP telephony , chances are it will be .

Mum doesn't have a mobile and it's not an option due to memory loss and an element of confusion which is likely to further deteriorate going forward.

I'm awaiting the council coming back to me re their system requirements.

You do realise that if the cabinet is in a bad condition with no due date for upgrade then any company that connects via Openreach will have the same issue? This may apply for just a landline as well as broadband.

I've had a look at my address and there's nobody who does BB and phoneline for less than 24 month contracts. If you're worried about cancelling it in the future if things change then I would 100% keep it in your mothers name as cancellation is a simple process in the case of the account holders passing. Try and make sure someone is named on the account to manage things.

Any reason why Virgin aren't an option? I'm presuming the medical alert is compatible.

When it comes to the emergency call buttons, land line ones are now obsolete. When my mum gave up hers, they didn't even want it back. All the new ones use the mobile phone network. The mobile phone bit is built into the base station; you don't need an actual phone to make it work.

Maybe step away from the comparison sites and ask the question of (eg) BT directly?

As stated , look at the providers site , this is a clip from BT , EE and Plusnet also offer 12 months deals although PN don’t do a phone service anymore , I’ve no idea why you would use a comparison site to determine if 12 month deals are available.

There are probably others , DYOR .

As both the previous replies have said, that's where you're going wrong.

Andrews and Arnold, for example, will give you a 30-day rolling contract but they don't generally turn up on comparison sites. Please note they're not cheap.

Yes they do 12 months as a did a check for a neighbour at the weekend but more expensive pm than a 24 month and if OP wants landline it's £5pm extra no calls.

But it's been said to OP that they could look for Social Tariff for broadband and landline for the mother.
