    Alert system?

That maybe an issue working with fiber broadband depending on what is used for it.

Copper wire system is meant to be removed sometime next year but not sure of the date but someone on here will know.

Have you talked to you mum's alert system provider about this and see what they suggest?

It's an alert system connected to her local authority social services to call for assistance in the event of a fall. I believe it's an RJ46 connection into one of the NOW router ports.

I am aware of the interface being "upgraded" around 4 months ago, I'm assuming that may be related to the copper wiring being removed. Open reach sent a tech who spent most of the day last year trying to get her hooked back up after her phone dropped, he informed that the system she's connected to is at end of life.

Two of her immediate neighbours have recently had virgin installed but I sense that won't be an option for her.

I'll look at BT over the coming days for a basic phone service and consider dropping her broadband.

If the device connects via RJ45 (not RJ46) then it's an IP device and will need the broadband to work.

Are you sure it's not connecting via RJ11 or a "BT plug" to the voice/phone port on the router?

I gave you a link in my last reply to you to puruse.

If you can I would contact the LA social services that installed or run the system and get them to advise on what system would work with a new fibre line or if you can't get fibre what will work when your mums current line is disconnected or copper phone line is not available.

There is no point in getting a new contract if in a few months time it can't be used with your mum's alert system is it?

I have said this before but I would contact the council who supplied the alert system and ask them what advise for moving internet and phone line.

Are you or your mum paying for this service?

There are non internet needetalert systems out there but cost from £ 20 pm and work by a SIM card.

You haven't said if your mum is on any benefits but have you looked at getting Social tariff with a provider?

Virgin do one as you said neighbours have that and you can search on MSE broadband checker and filter social tariff.

Is your mum on any priority register with her utilities as that may help things?

Most (perhaps all) telephony companies will want a minimum tie in for the best prices, and I expect it could easily be over double for those that offer monthly rolling from the outset. So even if you end up not using 6 ish months, it may still be cheaper to take that hit rather than pay more each month. Depending on the reason, sometimes the provider will often waive termination charges.

So I'd just look for the best deal for what you actually want, and manage the termination when it comes.

The problem the OP has is that the mother needs a council run/hired alert system for the mum that will work with a new telecoms company.

They also don't have a good telephone BT cabinet and constant disconnection due to this.

I don't think the OP has said if the mum needs a call package or landline port but I may have missed that.

Mum doesn't need a call package just a working landline to enable her to keep in touch with an ever decreasing circle.

Issue I'm finding at the moment is getting services that don't require a minimum commitment term that is suitable.

    Ok then

What did the LA say about getting the alert fob working with a new phone provider?

No calls package will mean expensive calls to her ever decreasing circle though.

I think your mum needs to sort out her alert system 1st to see what equipment will work SIM card or landline.

Has your mum a mobile that she can use if she ditched the landline as you could get a SIM only deal for £4 a month or so.
