Off the back of this thread, I check now.
I hadn't really thought about it before, at the self checkout in the supermarket the till is connected to the terminal so no risk of the wrong amount being entered, obviously there's still a risk of item scanning at the wrong amount but that's a different problem.
Today at the chip shop I stood on tiptoes and bent my neck so I could see the screen. I'll always make sure to check from now on.

"The old bag who was serving replied: "Don't you trust me?". I didn't
know what to say so just stood there blankly. She then said "Don't you
think I know what I'm doing?". I again said "could I see the screen
please?". She swore, and gave a theatrical sigh as she turned the
terminal round to face me. I paid and left in silence."Being the grumpy old git I am, I would have left the purchases and walked out.

They clearly have a problem, and I would not want to reinforce it. Smile and say that it had not occurred to you that they would be dishonest. The bank says you must always check so you check. If you are negligent, the bank does not have to compensate you if something goes wrong as a result.

Time to change banks.
No excuse for someone 24 hours a day with access to fraud system to clear the block.
Time to submit a complaint about this. Should be good for a few £££

I work retail and I'd never behave the way she did. Anyone can make a mistake.
The amount being charged is shown on our terminal (in a small font, unfortunately we can't change that) and is visible to the customer before they tap. However as many others in this thread have suggested, most people don't look at the amount. Several years ago one of my colleagues managed to type a '1' before the correct amount, eg £2.22 became £12.22, and we had to wait for her next visit to explain and refund to her card.
