Well obviously the vast majority of people are "bonkers" then. Look at the example above where only 1 in 400 wanted to see the amount before authorising! I've seen it myself eg in the bakery I mentioned above.

At least with a card you can't tap for more than £100, and if you do have to enter the PIN, you'll usually have to do it on the POS device where you'd clearly see the amount.

These days where most people pay for practically everything by tap tap tap it's incredibly easy to be careless occasionally. Or perhaps just feel awkward if you've been stood in a long queue for something and everyone else is tap tap tap without looking and you're the odd one out demanding to see the amount before even getting your phone out of your pocket.

How much room does a card take? Most phone cases have card slots so nothing extra to carry. After reading this thread there is no way I'd ever use Google/Apple Pay. Even setting aside carelessness etc, what if the phone ran out of battery, froze, crashed and wouldn't reboot etc as can happen with any such device. How do they contact you if they suspect fraud etc.

If they're authorising a debit from their account, without knowing the amount they're authorising, then yes - they are.

Use the card that's tucked away in the phone case? 😂

Apple/Google Pay fraud can't happen if the phone in question is dead, and if the phone's dead then you can't be contacted on it for ANY type of fraud.

I have been using ApplePay for years, without issues. Seems I am in good company -57% of UK adults (around 30 million people) were registered for at least one mobile payment service (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, etc.) in 2024, up from 42% in 2023. About 87% of those registered use a mobile wallet at least monthly.

Though as I said earlier, relying on a single method of payment really isn’t smart.

I would not want to keep my phone and cards together. It would be bad enough losing one or the other. I set the contactless limit to £20 for the card that I mostly carry for payments in person, and the contactless limit for my backup card to zero. My credit card mostly lives at home.

    Re-read what I wrote.

I didn't say that I did that - only that one CAN do that, in reply to your incorrect assertion that the authorisation happens before the amount is known.

No, wrt to the second quote, nothing to do with "phone dead" scenario, what I meant is what happened to the OP, ie suspected fraud using the phone. In that case, if the only method of contact is that same phone, then phoning it or texting it won't prove anything because they'll be calling/texting the same device as they suspect of being used for fraud!

Yes I do the same, I have an old fashioned wallet. I just meant that you could, if you wanted and thought it's too much effort carrying both a card and a phone, just put it in the phone case.

I think it's already been established in this thread that 99% of people are "bonkers", so doing what the majority do doesn't mean it's a sensible thing to do 😄
