Physical Credit/Debit Cards vs Apple Pay

have been very anti Apple Pay, not 95% of uk transactions and 80% of international transactions.
Still need a card for Costco fuel.0 -
Costco pumps can't read the virtual Costco card in their app - so you need that physical card anyway. I take my wallet when I go to Costco.

I tend to use Apple Pay for convenience but carry a physical card in case of any technical issues, I.e phone juice or signal.

The newer fuel dispensers let you pick a fixed litre or Pound value so you're not left with unwanted coins even with cash.

My parents are both boomers and use Google wallet almost exclusively - they prefer biometrics over pin based transactions plus they can alternate the underlying card used with ease.

Apple Pay doesn’t need a mobile signal. But the “technical issues” is a good, overall reason to carry at least one physical card.

Though "technical issues" if its at the merchants end could also take down physical cards.
In fact on one occasion I found it was down for contactless cards but working fine for ApplePay despite it also being contactless… Shop said inserting cards were working at the time but didnt have the card with me.

It will also depend on the underlying card as some may still require to go online all the time.

It appeared to be a problem with the unauthenticated payment pathway in this case, ApplePay is authenticated so hence it went through (and hence why it doesnt have the normal limits etc)

It's nothing to do with authentication.
Some cards simply can't be used offline due to the underlying card restrictions. The Apple/Google version will mirror that restriction even if authenticated.
