Quite right, there's a much larger list of transport operators accepting Express here (at the bottom).

    https://www.apple.com/uk/apple-pay/transport/

UK Apple site clearly more up-to-date than corporate site.

Mostly don’t carry cards. Apple Pay has been faultless - and more secure.

I've heard of both of these new-fangled payment methods, but it probably won't surprise you to hear that being of the "boomer" generation, I've never been formally introduced to them, and I certainly don't trust these mega-institutions with my finances. Further (and my youthful self would doubtless be horrified to hear me say this) I hate using mobile phones for anything other than making a telephone call: the screens are too small and fiddly; the battery quickly runs down; and increasingly they are a security risk themselves. A number of small businesses around me request cash only, as the card companies charge them a lot, and they aren't allowed to add that surcharge to what the customers pay. So I use cash for small amounts, but a credit card is useful for the bigger shopping, and allows me to budget for whatever variable amount I spend out of next month's pension.

    Tesco P@P is not contactless.

    https://www.tesco.com/help/pages/in-store-faqs/tesco-petrol-filling-stations/how-you-can-pay-for-your-fuel

You can pay for your fuel in our kiosks or use Pay at Pump.

You can fill up with a maximum of £120 of fuel using Pay at Pump. There’s no maximum spend when paying at our kiosks.

We accept all contactless payment cards for payments up to £100 in our kiosks. Contactless isn’t accepted at Pay at Pump.

We accept all UK-registered chip and pin cards at our Pay at Pump stations, except for Visa Electron.

It might surprise you to hear that I am a boomer and rarely use cash - I have £10 in my wallet just in case of emergencies - and always pay using my phone. Most small businesses I know prefer card payment to cash - if the fees are too high they are using the wrong platform - and if they don't they are probably doing it to avoid paying tax.

Phone use is only prohibited during the actual process of refuelling. Esso have pay by app where you pull up at a pump, open the app and select the pump number - the app knows where you are, get out of the car and fill up, put the pump back in the holster, get back in the car and drive away. It sorts out the payment, Nectar points - both collecting an spending - and produces a digital receipt.

As a fully-invested nerd, and I think there was a boosted Nectar bribe too, I gave this app payment system a whirl when it first appeared. First bit worked (enter pump number, pump unlocks for fueling) but the payment bit failed. Luckily I noticed so was able to pay in shop, avoiding the dreaded MOWPing letter.

Sod card payments, contactless or Apple Pay - what I want is a bloke who fills up for you, wipes the windscreen with a grubby rag and asks if you want the oil checked.

Had that last week on a Scottish Island! He took contactless inside. Unleaded 1.65/litre.

It may be of surprise to you but Apple (nor Google in its equivalent) actually touch your finances, whoever your card issuer is still the one managing which transactions to authorise etc. The device is actually given a unique card number so your bank knows if any payment attempt is made on your physical card, your watch or your phone etc.

Most small business around us won't accept cash at all because they know the cost of cash handling from cashing up, going to the bank, increased insurance costs, dealing with issues when the cash draws contents doesnt match what the till says it should have and they are honest people who declare everything they sell to HMRC and so dont mind there being formal records of every transaction.

With no effort the card fees, with no setup costs, no delays in receiving the money etc can be under 1.5%. With a little effort and maybe having to have some money held back for chargebacks etc under 0.75% is easily achievable. Long gone are the days where card fees were 3% and up to 5% on certain premium cards

Spoils it a bit, having to leave the car to pay. For the complete retro experience you need to be handing over notes and getting coins back (that get dumped in the cubbyhole).
