Are you a keen gardener Gen?

Or is it just a case of magniloquence on your part?

English is a wonderful language, one should make use of as much of it as possible.

Joseph Conrad, despite speaking Polish, Russian & French, chose to write in English.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

Now that I had to look up. At a guess I thought it meant misuse of words.

I found the quote I was looking for:

‘A sophisticated rhetorician, inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity’

That was Disrali talking about Gladstone.

    As I've always said -

then you end up with a vapid & vanilla vocabulary.

Absolutely, and most of hte world agrees, as English is now the lingua franca...

I try to write to the lowest common denominator.

It saves arguments when the less intelligent don't understand and get all 4rsey about what they think you said!

As my father discovered when he was called into the office because some daft bint had complained that he had told her to stop her verbal intercourse and attempted to report him

I don't think that's right - one should always attempt to use the simplest, clearest language to convey exactly what you mean. That doesn't mean using a vapid and vanilla vocab, as often the clearest way to convey meaning is to use a precise, well-chosen word.

I think people sometimes use longer and more complicated sentences than are necessary, for the sake of appearances.
