I like words. Hubris is a good one (and is applicable to a lot of people that post on internet boards). Quincunx is possibly my favourite.

Logic has lots of good words/phrases attached to it. Bifurcation is good. Ad hominem too.

Or it may just be that my chronic nastiness and obdurate refusal to look on the bright side of things goes far beyond garden-variety misanthropy. However I feel it should remain an arcanum between ourselves during these gelid days.

I like to use a good word now and again. What annoys me is when people use 20 words when 5 will do because they think it sounds cleverer.
I must admit to being guilty of doing that. Though in my defence, it's only when I'm still 500 words short of the 10% below minimum word count in my assignment. I just go back and replace all the big words! ;)

I have to say that the general usage of English on this Forum (in this group, anyway) is pretty good.

At least it's relatively free of the 'could of, should of' and misplaced apostrophes in plural's ;) that plague many forums.

Yes, no-one expects examination-level writing when making posts on the internet but some of butchery of the written word on forums is just a little much. Certainly it doesn't give much of a positive impression regarding the intelligence of the poster and consequently the strength of their argument.

I'd have to take a guess and say that the better standard of writing here probably reflects an older membership - educational standards seem to have slipped considerably in the last decade or so.

Unfortunately, the lowering of standards in the medium of written English appears to be attributable to the introduction of text speak. !!!!!!?

    Misuse can be infectious.

Went for a junior job on an economics desk. Part of the interview process was to write up a short report. My cause wasn't helped by writing "..the data is..." and so on.

Write it out 100 times Generali:

    Datum - singular
    Data - plural

    I didn't get the job.

Community is another word often best cut out. Not only is it usually unnecessary, it purports to convey a sense of togetherness that may well not exist. The black community means blacks, the business community means businessmen, the homosexual community means homosexuals, the intelligence community means spies, the international community, if it means anything, means other countries, aid agencies or, just occasionally, the family of nations.

    Not sure about that bit!.

i'm sure he said the amount he had to pay the builder was 130k euro, not the total cost.

Indeed, that was the cost of all of the changes, not the actual build cost.
