I'm an engineer; there is probably nothing you could teach me about using simple, clear language to ensure understanding by all those around me.
But it leads to painfully colourless prose, so while posting on this fine medium (& in pointless presentations), I like to cut loose a little & use a more varied, vibrant vocab."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.0 -

Correct usage of a semi-colon as well. I'm impressed.dolce vita's stock reply templates

#2. This time next year house prices in general will be lower than they are now

I read up on it once, & while I think I'm getting it right, there's no-one I know who knows enough to correct me."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.

Yes, it looks correct to me.0

Well, I'm no expert, but from what I've read, heard and been taught it looks right in the sentence you've written.
That is to say, a colon or full-stop would be too "strong" because then you would have two distinct sentences and the second would not then "flow" from the first; which is how you want it to be perceived.
A comma on the other hand, while breaking up the sentence and allowing "flow", would not create the two distinct points you have made.
In this situation a semi-colon is required.
That's why I think it works.dolce vita's stock reply templates

I don't think they are mutually exclusive. Language can be appropriate to the situation, use the best, most appropriate word, and still include varied and vibrant vocab....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I like to use a good word now and again. What annoys me is when people use 20 words when 5 will do because they think it sounds cleverer.
The Economist Style Guide is an interesting read if you're into that sort of thing. As they say in the army....KISS

Don't start me on acronyms! GROLIES is a good medical one (Guardian Reader Of Limited Intelligence Ethnic Skirt - I think it means someone that finds out about all the alternative medicine cures and then asks the GP why she isn't getting them). FUBAR, SNAFU and all those other military ones are entertaining too.

That's just bifurcation and so an invalid argument. It's possible to build more houses without building on every last scrap of land.Been away for a while.0

Nearby, an important beauty spot separating two major towns has been bought and split into hundreds of plots in the hope of planning permission in the future. The green belt does need protecting.
Ah but, one man's beauty spot is another man's wart.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
