Many laptop cases are so slim an Ethernet socket can not physically be accommodated in the case , but the solution is easy and relatively cheap , an Ethernet to USB adapter you plug the router to the adapter with an Ethernet cable and the adapter ‘tail’ to the laptop USB .

Testing with a powerline type adapter because of no Ethernet socket simply replaces one variable connection method with another one , a speed test carried out with powerline adapters is no better than one using WiFi , neither is any good when it comes to confirming the actual speed of the broadband.

I have to empathise with the OP

We swapped from Airband (WISP) 40 Mbps to Starlink 100 Mbps both systems were connected to the same 'router' (a Linksys MX4200) but although the speed-tests say it's faster, we haven't noticed any difference with phones, I Pad, laptop, firestick or TV.

    🤷‍♂️

But the OP isn't saying that they haven't noticed any difference, and for a lot of applications you probably won't, what they are telling us is that it's somehow noticeable slower.

Thanks for this; obviously I had a "technical blindspot" cos I didn't know that such an adapter existed!

    Thank you for sharing.

I'm quiet certain as the old copper lines are phased out and customers get the so-called "faster fiber BB," more and more people will note what you and I am suffering from

I'm suffering as the BS by Sky was it's "up to 3 times faster." The sad fact is(for me) it may be on paper, but in practice, on the tv when streaming, it is now often stuttering the movies, and laptop when just surfing the net.

We have the 150 fibre from sky, previous was sky - router is much nearer to everything that we use daily, and it's worse. Our children, one of them is with Sky and IIRC go something like the 500, I've noted his tv stutter when I watch YT.

I guess, in time, we will see more people complain about the b hype, just like smart meters, I guess.

I would have been satisfied if it was no faster but it's slower.

Edit. Btw, those suggesting I try the "erathnet cable," TBH, I can't be bothered. Why should I? And this view of mine was supported in part by another member's finding where he tried everything inc rhe earthnet option. In conclusion, this so-called 'fast fibre' is no different to your copper lines, may be slower like mine. A speed test may show its fast than the copper line you had but in practice it is not.

I am greaful for the suggestions, so thank you, but it's the conclusion I have reached.

The poster you're quoting had Airband which is basically mobile broadband and moved to Starlink (via satellite dish) both of which have limitations including lag. Your system and theirs have little in common.

You were advised to try ethernet to rule out any issues with the service to the router, I suspect it's your WiFi myself, but if you won't try it we'll never know.

Pedant mode …. Airband is actually a WISP service which is received by a dish from a 'transmitter' within line of sight.

I've been on to Sky again Yesterday and today.

    Some progress, sort of.

They agreed to send me an "updated hub." IE one more modern than mine.

Got the the new hub - It the ruddy same as exisitng RG SR203.

So i rang them again. I'm a calm person on the phone as I get it as they are only doing their job.

Again I was offered the Sky Max Hub, at zero cost but I have to have a new contract, ie the only difference is it will start again today, or when I agree, ie another 24 months, old contract started about 2 months ago.He also said they/engineers would come and fit up to 3 amplifiers IIRC Foc. for 24 months.

The thing is my copper BB was working a lot better before the fiber BB—not getting any more dropped connections, especially to the smart speakers. we have both, Google and Alexa, in total, 7 inc two screens.

In my judgment this change from copper to full fibr with the SR203 hub is not fir for the purpose

I said I'd sleep on it but as we ended the call, the bloke, who was a manager if IIRC, said, he'd give me compensation. I thought, oh yea, a fiver, but it was a month's money off bb and phone pack. I thought that was very decent of him as not for once did I seek anything like that. I guess he noted my frustration and the fact you have to fight the automated system to speak with a human.

I want to ask Sky bb users in the same boat as me, i.e., changed from copper to 150 or whatever its called and nowencountered many more dropped signals, does the Sky Max hub improve the situation?

(Presently, the old hub was moved in from the the garage to living room - we have an open plan house so I would have thought signal would have improved - I even bought a signal amplifier, but there was no difference.)

The SR213 Sky Max router tends to not be looked upon kindly in the Sky forums, people are frequently asking for the SR203 back, which usually isn't possible.

Unless there's a genuine external fault at the junction boxes outside or at the exchange, it's most likely not the fibre upgrade as it is by design less subject to dropouts.

Putting a WiFi router in a garage and expecting a good signal is never going to work well. Have you tried an ethernet connected device yet to check the connection to the router itself? What about the statistics that the router is reporting to the hub (not through a WiFi enabled device)?
