Where to keep your card?

I like a wallet or purse to keep my groats in.
However if paying with goats, the problem solves itself as they can just trot alongside you (admittedly with a degree of herding) until the point of exchange.

I know of two churches (different denominations) that accept card donations.

Person to person transfers are probably the biggest problem, we really need a universal way where you can type in an amount to send on your phone and then hold it against someone else's phone to transfer it to them.
I'm not religious but I've been to a few village churches because I'm interested in the history and they all had a card reader by the exit for donations.
The last three funerals I've been to have all had a muchloved page where you can give donations and no mention of any other method.
I can't remember the last time I saw a vending machine that took coins.
Being completely cashless is probably still a long way off, but it's quite rare thst you actually need cash these days.

One reason people like it is because it keeps things off the books. The chip shop/Chinese takeaway near me is cash only, presumably so they can avoid paying tax or employ people off the books. I've had tradesmen do small jobs for me and they asked for payment in cash and they quite strongly alluded to it being so they could keep it off the books.
I'll use cash if I have to but it's an inconvenience I'll avoid whenever I can. There was something I wanted to buy at at Christmas market and they were cash only so I went off to find a cash machine, but on the way I went past another stall selling the same thing who took card so I got it from there instead.

I'm the same, I'll need to use my card to get cash out, so if I can use my card directly I will. Adding the intermediate step of cash just creates more hassle and makes it more difficult to budget and keep track of spending.

As I said, I don't fully trust automated payments, but I use them, not least because utilities don't take cash any more (or indeed have a physical presence in many cases), as well as them being easier.
The system works well as long as it works, but there are so many points of total failure, one day everything will fail.
That's not conspiracy theory, maybe it's complacency theory.

Our local chippy is cash only.
Our local pub gives you a 3% discount for cash.
And if you are into vintage tractors and related things then cash is still very much king at tractor fairs and rallies. But mostly I'm cash free these days. I don't use phone apps. My "phone" banking is all done on a tablet that never leaves the house so I use credit and debit cards for everything.

Actually, some utility companies do accept cash payments, e.g.:
I am not suggesting that you do that though. I do not use cash. I try to limit the chance that there will be problems with electronic payments and minimise the impact of them if they do happen.

If/When the "everything fails" then cash will become largely worthless too - it has no inherent value if not backed by a functioning banking system.

99% of the time I pay with my phone. I still carry a purse though with cards and cash.
