  • Ah! I don't recall using it directly. Too bad we can't replay through the whole thing from scratch again.

If a competition specifies "Please do not post the answers" this forum respects that request. The Royal Mint did not specify this.

  • The co-ordinates lead to the Royal Mint in Wales, and to the Newton Tree (King's Tree) in Grantham.

  • The first prize in this competition is a £30,000 +/- gold bullion bar. I think that justifies expecting the entrants to have put in a little more effort than logging into an internet forum.

There is a competition on this site, ending this week, with a prize of £650,000 for all the effort of a free phone call.

It's over on the 'Post, phone & text competitions' board.

Posting is a privilege, not a right. This is a privately-owned site. Posting is a privilege, not a right. Any inappropriate posts or any issues that take up a disproportionate amount of resources or make it a worse place to be will be stopped at our discretion - with or without explanation. No one pays to use this site; when there are issues, we pay to resolve them. Sometimes we need to prioritise spending money on the site, other issues or better resources.
Please be nice to all MoneySavers. That’s the forum motto. Remember, the prime aim is to help provide info and resources. If you don’t like someone, their situation, their question or feel they’re intruding on ‘your board’ then please bite the bullet and think of the bigger issue. A Guardian article once "doffed its cap" to this forum as being the one place where consumers can collect together and fight back. Our job is to help keep it that way.

It shouldn't be necessary for the Royal Mint to explicitly state this as it's obvious to anyone with any sense of fairness and sportsmanship, plus copying answers instead of working them out fully oneself is likely to make the entry void.

When you walk into a shop, do expect there to be a sign stating "you must pay for any item you take out of the shop" and if such a sign is not present do you assume you can just take anything you like without paying or gift it to a friend or do you inherently understand the correct thing to do?

    The Treasure hunt description states:

"Many will join. Some will go far. But only a few will reach the final stage and be in with a chance of claiming the ultimate treasure"

This makes it clear they aren't expecting people to give the answers away or for entrants to copy other people's answers, else they would expect a much higher percentage of coin purchasers to reach the final stage.

"The Brilliant Uncirculated and silver Proof editions are designed so that the coin can be interacted with to progress through multiple levels of challenges. Both editions contain clues and tactile finishes that encourage exploration. From hidden details to cleverly concealed messages, the packaging itself becomes part of the journey."

"Presented in premium packaging, the Brilliant Uncirculated and silver Proof editions contain hidden clues, cleverly concealed messages and tactile finishes that encourage interaction and exploration – rewarding curious hands and eyes."

They are clearly expecting participants to engage with all elements of the coin and packaging in the way they designed, to solve the riddles, not seek them out or share them online.

Section 23 of the Rules states (amongst other things):

"Under no circumstances, will The Royal Mint accept entries that are:
    automatically generated by computer;
completed by third parties or in bulk;"

So yeah, if you haven't done the work yourself, you've broken the rules. Be prepared to demonstrate how you worked out your answers when they verify the prize winner. Maybe they will ask the winner a question about the process which will make it obvious whether or not they did it the proper way….
