The Great British Treasure Hunt Stage One: Hints and answers 

Uniting the Shield 

Clicking on the word 'shield' will reveal this strange diagram. Can you figure out how it might reveal the answer?

Riddle:

Upon the coins a shield is shown, 

Six fragments split yet not alone.

Seek in your change, the puzzle starts, 

To find the whole from broken parts.

Set them down where arrows guide,

The shapes unite, the shield's inside.

From these the letters shine in view,

The path ahead is marked for you.

Hint: The Queen Elizabeth II definitive set is a series of coins you will find in your change - each one unique, yet somehow familiar. Could they be fragments of a larger design? 

Seven Siblings

Riddle:

Seven siblings born of light,

Yet none may speak or stand.

They chase the storm but flee the night,

A bridge above the land.

Hint: Is there something formed of light, where seven colours reside together? What could that dial be trying to tell you? Have you looked closely at the symbols along its edge?

The Constellations 

Hint: Do the discs move? Can you align the heavens?

In metal’s mirror, time is cast,

A tribute to a thinker past.

Not the coin that starts your quest,

Two quiet marks may first appear,

But seek the name that’s written clear.

Not where morning makes its start,

Hint: Two little marks. Could they be the artist’s initials? Then look again – the full name is hiding in plain sight, not where the morning makes its start, but where the sun and shadows part.

The Eye of Fire

Behold the Sun in burnished gold,
Around it, spheres in silence roll;
Yet stiller truths the centre keeps,
Where fiery eye in secret sleeps.

For midst the blaze of molten crown,
Two shapes, not fixed, nor written down,
Lie waiting for the glance askew – 
Not straight, but bent, the path is true.

Shift your gaze and tilt the line,
Let angled light the code define;
There lies the Law, in letters two,
Each born of force and motion’s clue.

No blaze alone these truths betray – 
But edge and eye may find the way.

The Penny Drops

Beneath the page where shadows fall,
The bands align –  but not for all.
What seems like chance or scattered fate,
Conceals a key to navigate.

Then lines will blur and stripes will slide,
A dance of dark where clues may hide.
Unite your print with what’s supplied,
To see the message held inside.

A fleeting thought, a sideways glance,
The mind begins its quiet dance. 
A shift, a spark – the puzzle stops…
And in that hush, the penny drops.

2.3 - Explorer

The Golden Glyphs

A rivet binds this clever face,
Two wheels that turn in tight embrace.
A cipher formed of disc and ring,
Where letters, signs and numbers cling.

The coin sits central, calm and still,
Its edge adorned with cryptic will.
But what you seek is not yet shown – 
The symbols lie in web alone.

The answer hides in Newton’s lore,
A sketch not quite like those before.
Amongst the lines where white ink flows,
One golden trio softly glows.

Align the mark, the sign, the name,
And let the wheels become the flame.
Decode the string, let meaning show,
And onwards on your path you’ll go.

Secrets of the Spheres

Orbiting our fiery Sun,
Eight Gods circle one by one.
From North to South, from East to West,
Celestial spheres have come to rest.

As if joined by cosmic tether,
Giant and junior close together.
Turn the compass, scan the round – 
Where can both orbs now be found?

Next, gaze upward, search the skies,
Where shining beauty softly flies.
The goddess famed for charm and grace,
Find where she holds her current place.

Lastly, King of stormy sea,
The trident wielder, where is he?
The compass aids to scan the sky,
From this vantage point so high.

3.1 Decoder

Lost in the Shadows

A hidden passage awaits your quest,
Its gate is locked like all the rest.
But one small word will grant you through –
A word the pack reveals to you.

No need to guess, no need to roam,
The key is in your pack alone.
A silver shard, both straight and true,
Will show you more than shapes can do.

The forms you see are not the end –
They twist and turn, they break and bend.
But bring the mirror close to play,
And watch as meaning finds its way.

When held just so, the lines align,
A single word will cross your mind.
The smallest spark, the core of flame –
The force from which all matter came.

ATOM

Which leads to:

Let prism drink the light of day,
To charge the path and show the way.
Hold it close to sun or flame,
And prime the board for Newton’s game.

Then step into the shadow’s keep,
Where hidden signs no longer sleep.
In deepest dark, they start to rise –
Three glowing marks before your eyes.

By day they wait, unseen, ignored,
But in the night, they light the board.
Together, these will spell the key –
The answer glows in one, two, three.

The riddle suggests something on the packaging glows in the dark. I'm away from home at the moment, so can't check.

Looks like we need to use the mirrored paper along with the transparent sheets with dots and lines to work out 3 shapes that need to be inputted into the wheel.

Struggling with it at the moment, I thought I saw a diamond in there though.

You don't need to use the filter. The triangle and the symbols surrounding it on the packaging are glow in the dark. Expose them to a bright light and both the triangle and three of the symbols should glow.
