I wonder how many folk will jump onto that gas one because they are suckered in by the SC and then end up [paying more because they haven't actually done the sums…

I expect we'll also see some on here complaining that it "isn't fair" that they should have to pay higher unit charges…

Gas unit rate only marginally higher than current flexible rate, low users who have chosen a cheaper fix will in many cases face exit fees to change tariff (North West Region)

Yes - it's those who will jump off (actually decent) fixes I was thinking of in particular. we've seen so many people on here fixated about SC costs to the extent that they practically overlook the unit rate!

Its interesting that the discount is far higher a percentage on gas than electricity in those quotes - although I guess you would have to compare a fix low SC with a fix standard SC over same term to be sure of exact breakeven - in case their is a hint of that in their normal flex to fix charging.

Taking E7 - 43.61 - 25.80 a drop of 17.81p - £65 pa

And note that they have for some reason loaded the fix night by more than the fix day - vs SR by 1.13p/kWh vs 0.33p (but again maybe their fixes do that anyway)

Taking SR in isolation 44.32 - 26.51 a drop of 17.81p - c 40% - again £65

Taking gas - 29.03 to 5.74p - a drop of c80% - so less than a quarter - and at £85 - more than half the total £150 for DF.

But I guess for current majority - the 85% on mains gas - at least for that region

Taking dual fuel as SR + Gas - 73.35p to 32.25p - a drop of 41.1p - a drop of 56% to just under half.

Over the year £268 → £118 - the same £150 saving I believe for the EDF and the EOn Next 2 year fix equivalents in the recent MSE post on their low SC offerings (see link below).

For east midlands dual fuel - but this time standard fix vs low SC fix - to try and eliminate variable to fix factors

Rough fag packet estimates suggest breakeven around 1800 kWh electric and 7500 kWh gas - the old Ofgem Low qaurtile TDCV (since dropped to 1600 and 6000 repectively) - which again - the levels quoted in the MSE thread

You have to then wonder - if the low TDCV use - might have come from Ofgem themselves.

At E7 Ofgem presumption of 42% night - an average unit rate added of .42 * 2.42 + 0.58 * 3.34 = 2.9536p - or pay back on 17.81p sc saving = £65 per year / 2.9536 = c2200 kWh per annum total.

Again matching the old Low Quartile Ofgem TDCV consumption for PC2.

I know it doesn't impact the majority - but to some extent - you might have hoped the PC2 SC savings might have matched closer to the £150 for dual fuel - but the downside of course - potentially much higher rate escalation.

For higher E7 off peak users - the total drifts even higher due to lower absolute impact on their personal average rates. Someone who might achieve my E10 sort of level - 75% off peak - pays .75*2.42 + 0.25* 3.34 on average = 2.65p on ave unit rate - so arguably there breakeven comes at £65/0.0265 = 2450kWh. (Some battery/solar set-ups achieve an even higher 90%+ off peak annual average - pays even less - arguably exactly the sort of household this change wasn't designed to help)

Day V 30.7 - Stand F 28.01 p =2.69p absolute difference

Night V 13.69 - Stand F 12.49 p = 1.2p absolute difference

But both are offered with an equal 8.8% discount on the fix - not to be sniffed at.

Note that by speaking to an agent I was able to select a low standing charge fixed tariff for electricity and a normal fix for gas both of which start when my old cheap fix ends. In the interim, I'll continue to monitor any new tariffs which become available from Octopus.

For gas the break even point is 65384kWh no fag packet here

Units x 0.0724 + (365*0.2903) = Units x 0.0737 + (365*0.0574)

Units x -0.0013 = 20.95 - 105.95 = -85.00

That's an enormous amount of gas

Elec(flat) 2519kWh

0.2613 units + 365*0.4432 = 0.2871 units +365*0.2651

Units x 0.0258 = 65.00

As a fairly low user who just about fits the category, I'd save a whole £36 a year on that rather pathetic attempt at a low standing charge fix. Edited to add, this is compared to their standard fix. I'd save just £4 on gas despite the actually low standing charge, and am not sure why £158 for electric for the year is considered eligible to qualify for a low standing charge? Not really a surprise though.

Not worth it for me, because if we had a slightly colder than the not too bad winters of the past few years, I'd be scared to put the heating on as much as I'd need to stay warm. Would be as well fixing at the standard fix available. Might as well ride it out until my fix actually comes to an end, though thanks to Iran & the US, looks like it may be an expensive winter!

Thats why I used fix vs fix rather than fix vs variable, as the standard fix - already has a discount (for now?) built into it against the variable.

Another c5p/5% today to 116p/therm - almost back in pre MoU territory for UK gas - 42% higher than last summer - and EU gas higher still. Even with oil Brent up c8% today - its only back 10% above last year - and a lot further below the MoU pricing..

Remember the £150 / £65 PC2 - is the zero consumption SC saving - every unit used at a higher rate - eats into the saving.

If you use just half those old low TDCVs your only going to save £75 on these deals for dual fuel - and a very disappointing £32.50 for the all electric PC2 - I wonder how many all electric homes - without solar at any rate -really only use 1100kWh pa - and thats already the most expensive way to heat if using conventional heating.

I am not sure what the low end distribution is in the Ofgem data (do the publish a distribution graph anywhere ?) - but I'm pretty sure short of those with battery / solar etc - there wont be many poor or vulnerable households using so little.

To imagine the 66% who have never taken a fix - are going to do so to save a fraction of £150 - or even risk not saving at all - I think is optimistic. To persuade the 33% who have - already fixed - less of a stretch IMO

I live in a small modern 2 bed mid terrace - heat by NSH on E10 rates - and I really have to scrimp - like heating everywhere but living room to just 14C in winter - to stay under the new median TDCV 3400 kWh. When could see my neigbours use on CTM - they were 6000/7000 kWh -

It works for me, gas only though as I'm on IOG.

New build house, so circa 5000kWh of gas usage.

And I can supplement or replace some of that gas with electric heating overnight if need be.

So where's the break-even?

• Flexible vs 12M Fixed Low SC: Low SC is cheaper up to 3965 kWh/yr of electricity, up to 56672 kWh/yr of gas.
• 12M Fixed vs 12M Fixed Low SC: Low SC is cheaper up to 1779 kWh/yr of electricity, up to 7522 kWh/yr of gas.

And for completeness:

• Flexible vs. 12M fixed: 12M Fixed is always cheaper, for both electricity and gas.

I find that interesting. None of those electricity taiffs appeal, but our annual gas use is close to the changeover point between the two fixed tariffs. I've been on Gas Tracker for 4(?) years or so and it's only been as cheap as the regular 12M fix once in the past month, but I'm not using much at the moment and the extra cost is pennies a day, so I'm probably staying there.
