as you've spent several hours organising your friends into thanking you in the last week, you'd be best qualified to comment on the subject of self-absorbtion

why don't you move on - deal with the preposterous insult you suffered here last week in private - and stop taking it out on fellow-members, who are not muppets for the fact that they missed your clever scheme

how did you hack the Member List?

    WHO ARE YOU?
Andy watch my text.....I have never suffered any insult of any level

Guilty as charged your honour! I do deny any personal attacks, but I may have offered my opinion a couple of times in response to what I considered to be an insulting post.

As for the thanks I've received, I have stated I feel a fraud for these, there are a lot of people doing a lot of hard work to help others and all I do is post rubbish. I'm more than happy for these to be removed. ..................

Some posts will naturally fetch an insulting response. It is an individuals prerogative to retaliate to rubbish and waste of space posts yet every posters obligation to honor this website for the sake someone so magnanimous enough to start a free useful website and other contributors who selflessly contribute. I do not wish my family friends and acquaintence to look down on me for browsing this website at every given little spare time and claiming that MSE is a website does not maintain high standards. Some posters posting about the thong they wish to wear and blank posts and abusing the thankyou buttons which is otherwise the only way to express gratitude in return, Please remember not to drag this website to the gutters. The sad souls whose social life is limited to chatting on board, either do so with some dignity and respect to others or seek chatsites which I understand is in plenty.
And I make no bones about my being so passionate about this issues or care two hoots to anyone who cannot appreciate or see the sincerity of this post.

I think I can answer this one.

I believe that at initial sign up there is a tick box option to be excluded from the members list.

Presumably that option was put to use?

Please let us either adopt Ted's excellent idea or scrap the thanks button altogether.

And end the arguements, all of them, please.

there's no need to scrap the Thanks button, just scrap the Most Thanked league table at the bottom of the main screen so the ridiculous element of competition it encourages disappears...

I am clearly not a worthy opponent for your talents if I am unable to discern your true motives.

It is true that I have exchanged a series of PMs with people on this, several being people that cleared up some minor misunderstanding with me, and offered support.

andy, the point of the thanks button was to reduce all the thanks posts that was taking place, make it an easy way to say thanks, a way to show appreciation, the qustion of abuse of it came up when it was 1st put in place and Martin replied with if people want to thank each other and boost there thanks then ITS NO BIG DEAL.

so 9 hours of discusions later is there really the need for all this?

This is a huge and vital site. There are thousands of members. It would be unrealistic to expect us all to agree on every subject.

"Humour" means something different to every person. With all due respect meheralfaf, it is arrogant of you to expect everyone to abide by the standards you deem acceptable. No one is forced to participate on or even read any board they find distasteful. This site offers a huge amount of choice, that is one of the things that makes it so attractive.

I do not accept that some of the posts in the Arms drag this website into the gutters, quite the opposite in fact. The innuendo is full on and right out there in the open. This makes it easy to avoid if that is not to your taste.

Ted mentioned earlier that the existence of the Arms means that very many knowledgeable people stay active on the site far longer than they perhaps otherwise would. How much of the knowledge currently shared would be lost if the regulars in the Arms were told to tame the humour down? As with the boards there are many threads there, if one of them is not to your taste, ignore it.

Please also remember that some of the people monitoring the upper boards are highly capable people who, while wanting to help, may also want to relax a little. Just because someone is posting "rubbish" in the Arms under one name does not mean that they might not be giving very valuable help on one of the other boards under a "serious" username. It is my understanding that a number of people do this.

I think "Live and let live" might be a good thought for us all to consider right now, be it about thanks or innuendo. This is a big site, there IS room for us all.

ask your friend that's spent a week on an undeclared vendetta

what is the point of thanking posts from December in locked threads - that hardly saves the effort of reply?
