You may find that some of their posts contain swearing, sexual inuendo and personal attacks. You may also struggle to find many (any?) useful money saving tips or help and advice for other members.

Not all members are here to save money and help others.

Guilty as charged your honour! I do deny any personal attacks, but I may have offered my opinion a couple of times in response to what I considered to be an insulting post.

As for the thanks I've received, I have stated I feel a fraud for these, there are a lot of people doing a lot of hard work to help others and all I do is post rubbish. I'm more than happy for these to be removed. In fact I agree with Fran's suggestion that the thanks button is removed from the Arms altogether.

I visit the Arms to have a bit of fun. To anyone I may have offended doing this I apologise and would suggest they add me to their ignore list so that I do not offend them further in the future. :)

If someone wishes to use their time to ultimately thank themselves or get friends to thank them, then I think they completely have too much time on their hands and should be ignored and looked on for what they are, rather than given the fame that they don't deserve.

    Very well said :T :T :T

and I hope we'll be seeing your name appearing a lot more frequently in the arms in future :D

    I'll be watching ;)

i had a look and noticed a pattern that someone used aliases (probably) to thank themselves.
i may only have a low number of thanks but i find it an honour if someone has found something i have posted useful.
i don't look on it as a competition and i hope this is the same as the majority of people here, we all have a common aim to save money and the friendship and banter element is a bonus that makes the site a little bit friendlier.
i have had many useful tips from various people here, the majority of whom seem very nice, honest people.
the odd annoying agressive one can get lost as far as i am concerned
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

The Thanks button has been made pretty meaningless by people sitting round in the Arms thanking each other for thanking them.

In my view the most helpful person on the whole boards is Debt_Free_Chick who spends many hours helping out people in serious debt with excellent advice and sympathy. How many thanks has she scored? 205!

Frankly anybody who has a higher score than that doesn't deserve it.

    Just my 2 cents.

Martin and all of his 2951 thanks (and counting) will be gutted :(

As I was probably the first to point out what appeared to me to be abuse of the "thanks" button perhaps I should comment.

I'd like to see the "thanks" button retained. It serves a useful purpose in allowing people to agree with a post without actually commenting on it.

I would prefer the thanks totals to exclude the "Arms" not because it's a forum I never visit but because it's purpose is not directly related to the site ethos. That of saving money. It is there for entertainment and it is important that the "Arms" remains as having a number of people onsite some or most of the time means that when a "new post" arrives there is almost certainly a "Regular" about who can put up an answer promptly.

I would also prefer that the totals of those most regularly thanked posters should be listed in each particular forum.
This would enable a wider spread of "experts" in particular areas of knowledge to be represented. I don't know who the most frequent, regularly thanked person is in, for example, the "Credit Card" thread is but having it flagged up in that forum heading would enable a new member to suss out who can usually be relied on. The same would go for each of the forums. Having a forum based, rather than site based list, would reduce the potential for abuse.

I am sure I am not the only mentally ill, physically disabled person who posts here who finds posting online is the only way they are aware of whereby they can make a postive contribution to society. It may be "sad" that noticing the number of "thanks" is their only recognition for the time they spend online trying to help others, however pointing out that they should "Get a life" is rather pointless, the equivalent of telling someone with agoraphobia they should "Get out more". I would if I could, just show me how.

Could the thanks be reset to zero at the beginning of each month

I don't know if that is an easy thing to do

Eveyone would start with a level palying field and any fixing would show up very easily for eveyone to see.

And who would waste time fixing there score if it was all going to be undone at the end of the month
