A colleague went on hiking holidays in Europe every year. Two weeks with a backpack only.

Probably easier to do than 2 weeks in a 5* star hotel or on a cruise.

And I guess it would be pretty hard to hike with a 2 or 4 wheel suitcase. 🤔

You're right@Pollycat but the likelihood is that the cruise or hotel holiday would be inclusive of luggage etc.

We're going on a city break next month and, although it's a package for hotel and flights, everything else is an add on. If we were to pay for all the extras that the airline throws at you on the website it could double the cost of the package. It's not just luggage but seats and even a cost for emailing your boarding cards to you!

    My suggestions:
    1. pay for the 10kg cabin bag. Buy a lightweight holdall or backpack of the right dimensions ( search on ebay or Amazon).

     2. to reduce the liquids, take stick deodorant, electric or battery shaver only, shampoo bar ( 99p from Savers chemist or Home Bargains), 100g bottles of sun scream (from Poundland or similar) and keep the empty bottles, then you can refill them from a larger bottle next time you go). If you really MUST have a posh brand, buy the P’land stuff, empty out the contents and refill with your posh stuff. Buy some cheap “copycat” aftershave and leave behind what you dont use.

    3. Wear the heaviest clothes and shoes. Pack anything else heavy in the underseat bag.

    4. When packing, view any empty space, however small, as potential packing space. Glasses cases, shoes, shaver box,etc can have little bits and bobs packed in them. I always put a few cotton buds, ibuprofen tablets, make up remover pads, plasters etc etc.

    5. Rather than travel wash, take a small bag of hand wash powder ( Poundland has). Bung a bit into a sink of hot water to do a wash.

    6. Crocs are versatile, comfy, lightweight, waterproof, squashable, cool footwear (not exactly stylish, but you can’t have everything!). They go with shorts, cargo trousers, swimwear. Navy or black ones are even hardly noticeable under long trousers if worn with thin, same colour socks. Double up as poolside shoes and will keep your “just-showered” feet clean.

    7. Stick to beige or black bottoms and darker-coloured tops, as they dont show sun cream stains and hand wash nicely.

    8. Plan a week’s outfits in advance. Then repeat the plan for week 2. Each top you pack is first worn briefly in the evening and can then be worn again in the daytime after “airing” for a day or so. Less washing!

No doubt i’ll think of more tips. Or someone else will.

And that's why people shouldn't be sucked in by headline prices.
TUI & JET2 include luggage (20kg/25kg) in their package prices

I've never paid for seats short haul and have never bought food in flight.

Couldn't agree more about the in flight food @Pollycat. I'm amazed by the people buying the Pringles and chocolate bars. Obviously, I don't need to eat for a short city break flight but when it's a longer flight I always take my own and buy from a local supermarket for the return.

I'm shocked at airport prices as well but the bars and restaurants are always busy. I guess people don't really worry about money when they're in holiday mode

Going back to luggage, my BIL has never packed a hold suitcase whenever he flies. He did 6 weeks in Aus and took a backpack and cabin bag. He hates the idea of queuing at check-in and waiting at the other end to collect

I've never paid for seats short haul and have never bought food in flight.

Our favourite adult only hotel in Costa del Sol is only available with TUI flights and transfers from Glasgow.
They offer the same hotel from Edinburgh but that means EasyJet or Ryanair flights - and with baggage included the prices are significantly more expensive.
We like the generous weight allowance from either TUI or Jet2.
    Each to their own.

    Hi MikeyPGT
I use Wizz to fly to Cyprus and find the cabin bag OK for for short break but wouldn't want to do a long holiday.
Shoes are my main problem,  even stuffing them full of underwear and any liquids I find 2 lots of footwear and clothes makes it a struggle to zip up my bag.

I might try the backpack style next year as I bought a gym bag style last year which has a zip the whole way around.

I liked the suggestion about the bag for life, that removes the closing of the cabin bag issue.

I always put mine under my seat, so I'd be aware if anything fell out.

I don't take suncream but you can probably buy your brand in duty free, there is a Boots at Luton.  You then get a bag which you can add a Meal Deal to for the plane as food and drinks are a rip off on any flight.

Also remember you won't be able to bring anything extra back, gifts for family etc as your cabin bag is rammed full of clothes.

If you think you will fly with Wizz again within 12 months it maybe worth looking at Priority so you get 2 cabin bags.

I regularly do 2 weeks away hand luggage only and if you can do that you can travel indefinitely.

In Europe I usually get an apartment rather than hotel which typically has a washing machine. In Asia, laundry services are very cheap and available on every corner. You only need 3-4 days worth of clothes. Toiletries can be kept to a minimum as they can either be bought there or are often provided
