As a woman I wouldn't want to do it and I wouldn't want my OH to do it on a holiday with me.

I'd rather take hold luggage to ensure I can get my preferred sun protection with me.
I wouldn't rely on getting a specific brand abroad.

I find it less stressful to book a holiday with the companies that includes hold luggage in the package price
    Like TUI and Jet2

I'm a woman who.almost exclusively travels hand luggage only. I only take the absolute essentials in terms of toiletries - facial suncream (which doubles as moisturiser), lip balm, deodorant, shampoo. I buy body suncream (if needed) when I'm there - I find brands like Garnier and Nivea are fairly widely available in Europe at least. I also sometimes don't take shampoo, and just use what the hotel has - but my hair is short, undyed, and unfussy.

I don't really take makeup unless it's travelling for work, but then it's a powder base, lipstick and mascara.

Clothes-wise I have some dresses which pack up incredibly small, plus 1 pair of trousers (I recommend Sweaty Betty explorers) plus a few t-shirts/vests, and a thin jacket. I'll wear jeans, and a jumper/sweatshirt on the plane. One pair of sandals (suitable for sightseeing) one pair slim trainers, flip flops if there's a beach / pool - max of two swimsuits if there is. I'll wash vests / t-shirts as needed.

I don't really do hold luggage as I've had experiences of my case not making it, and I hate waiting by baggage belts. My OH is also a hand luggage only person.
As I said 'I wouldn't want to do it'.
But if I had to, I'm sure I could.

I have sensitive skin and need to take suncream that I know suits me.
And I know that it won't be available out of the UK.

I really don't go on holiday to rinse clothes out.

Never suffered lost hold luggage but I pack each case exactly half and half so it wouldn't be that much of a disaster.

I normally don't need to rinse anything out - two weeks on the beach / warm climate should be doable on hand luggage as you don't need the heavier jumpers etc.
    Didn't you write 'i'll wash vests/ t-shirts as needed'?
That's why I commented on that.
If I really need to, but normally not. I definitely don't wash undies, I take enough for the whole trip plus a spare per week.

I take all my oldest undies and bin them as I go :D - makes room in the bag to bring home the odd trinket or two

    OK.
Let's be clear on this subject.

There are people who are happy to trot around in gym gear, vest tops and trekking sandals. And wash out stuff as needed. And aren't fussed about using whatever toiletries are available.

Then there are people who like to wear nice dresses (women), shirts & trousers/dressy shorts in the evening. And would prefer not to rinse clothes in the sink.
And are fussy about what suncream & toiletries are available.

As far as this thread goes, it really depends on which group the OP belongs to.

Well as he said " I don't do 'dressed up' on holiday" some posts back, I'm guessing more like the first...

I prefer to travel with hand luggage only because it's less hassle, not more - no waiting at baggage collection, no lugging of big bags to and from the airport, up and down stairs, no deciding what to split between hand and hold baggage in case it goes missing, (no appearance of my undies on the carousel when my hold bag was ripped open by rough handling!)

I pop my lightweight rucksack on my back and off I go!
And you would do that for a two week beach holiday?
    What's your concern?
No concern really, Im just bemused that people will happily spend hundreds, if not thousands of pounds on a holiday, and then baulk at paying £100 tops to be able to have a full suitcase of clothing, without the need to have to wear the same pair of pants for 2 weeks, have no shoes, spend the fortnight washing in the apartment, and likely spending money anyway in resort at inflated prices on the stuff you could have brought from home at cheaper cost.

    Crack on though  :D
As I explained above, cost is not my driver for taking only hand luggage. And I've not had to do any of the things you describe (albeit I've only been away for a week at a time)

    Ah.
    Now that makes a difference.
The OP is going away for 2 weeks.

We go to Europe for 2 weeks and long haul for 3-4 weeks.

    Ah.

I do come back with unused clothes from a week and don't see that I would need to wear the same pair of underpants, go without shoes or buy a load of stuff (except maybe suncream for a beach holiday) if staying another week. OP is happy to wash a few things.

I am talking about the max hold luggage though, not the itty bitty allowances of wizz air.

I think you can get more than itty bitty hold luggage allowance with wizzair.
Of course, it depends how much you are willing to pay.

So... to go back to my earlier comment about package holidays with included hold luggage, sometimes it pays (😂) not to look at the headline price.

I never come back with unworn clothes.
Because I plan what I'm going to wear and take nothing that I won't wear. (It's part of my OCD).

I did a response to Westin's post earlier and it seems to have disappeared.

This is a money-saving site. We are all different, and we all prioritise different things. There is a cost of living crisis, which has impacted many people, and has passed many by, but a lot of people have had to, and are willing to, make sacrifices to go on holiday.

I've a colleague who did retire and return and says she is only working to pay for holidays. I know several others who pick up extra shifts to pay for holidays. The cost of luggage could mean having to work an extra two 12 hour shifts for someone, which focusses the mind.

We have always had checked luggage, with most of it never seeing daylight. Our local airport has very few international flights. We often fly from there to Heathrow, leave a gap of several hours, and fly onwards from there, or start a package holiday from there. That obviously ramps up the price of a holiday.

Looking for somewhere new to go I was pricing flights on skyscanner. One of the online holiday companies offered a flight to London, then to our final destination, with two airlines, a short gap, and a guarantee to get us there if we missed the connection. The caveat was that we couldn't have checked luggage as there wasn't time to get across the airport.  We saved over £300 on any other way I could find to get there.

I had reservations, but my wife said we would be fine, so we went for it. I was surprised how well we coped. We had vacuum bags, packed tightly, and to be honest I never missed anything the whole two weeks. There were some things I usually take that were left behind, like my laptop, but again it wasn't a hardship.

I'd have very little hesitation in doing it again if the deal was right.

I'm not clear why it needs to be so polarised. For some people, including me, the savings can be worthwhile, and the downsides are limited.

Others can't bear the thought of going light, and would rather not go, which is their prerogative.

My first foreign holiday, with my girlfriend, was over 40 years ago. We ended up in pretty much the fanciest hotel in the South of Spain by a strange chance. We were 20-30 years younger than everyone else, a lot of the men were wandering around the hotel in suits and ties, while we were in shorts and t-shirts. We fitted in okay, were maybe regarded as curiosities, but were made welcome by the other guests, and treated well by the staff. This thread is giving me flashbacks to that!

I'm surprised at some of the snide comments that have appeared on what is supposed to be a 'friendly and supportive' money saving forum.  I'm flying solo so no family to stress about and will be as casually dressed on holiday as I am at home.  The all-inclusive holiday is costing in total £890 for two weeks.  WizzAir are looking at an extra £160+ for hold luggage which is quite a big add on to me.  I was really just looking for feedback from others who had done something similar but perhaps I was being about optomistic that it wouldn't lead to a pile on ...
