Have he / you tried to find out if he would get any support?

Perhaps try healthcare professionals / council / Parkinsons UK ?
No he hasn't tried to find out.

Unless there's help or grants for home owners and savings of over £160000 that anybody knows about.

We will try to get a meeting with his Parkinson's health care person and he is meant to be having a home visit from the memory team that are going to assess him in his home but that's not until December.

Just about to suggest this - would either of them be eligible for a grant towards fitting a proper wet room?
    Thanks.

I replied to jbainbridge about the same question.

The dining room could be turned into a kitchen and the existing kitchen into a utility room for washing machine with wc/wetroom
    For less than £12,000 ?
Do you have a price for this work then?

I don't have any idea of costs that's why I am asking for help and/ideas before I get him to get people in to price up job.

    Thanks for the reply though.
I think it would be worth having a builder round to quote on the actual property- new kitchen & bathroom is probably closer to £20k installed, plus he'd be looking at new flooring, walls etc., if there's a wider reconfiguration of the house, that will push the price up further.

I've had a new shower room installed and a new kitchen in the last 5 years, they were in the order of ~£10k each. Both were to existing rooms (neither of them large) and they didn't need much reconfiguration of plumbing/services.

I didn't have the cheapest fittings to either, but a big cost is labour and that doesn't change whether you're putting in the cheapest or the most expensive stuff.

If there is only £12k to spend, that is likely to dictate what is possible.

You might find this thread useful. Although it is only for a refit- no structural work and not much plumbing work .

He knows a builder that he has used before for few jobs and is very pleased with his work. He is away for a couple of weeks so we will arrange a date so the missus and I can be there to discuss things.

I think £12k or more will be a shock for him but he has money in current account so maybe a few grand more.

What state is the kitchen in? Could it be re-used if moved from one room to another?  Or could you pick up a decent second hand kitchen off ebay or the like?

    Not in good shape.

Kitchen sink and unit about 30 years old and only 2 wall cabinet's, work top and no other base cabinets or storage.

The only thing about picking a used kitchen is I don't know what's going to happen with the layout of kitchen if a WC is fitted and I don't think he would want to spend money on a used kitchen nowish if he may not use all the units

Thank you for that suggestion as it is sometimes bear in mind.

In our case, it's an existing cloakroom with the new loo and sink going in the same places as the old.  The work will be purely cosmetic.

But, yes, over £4K for this will be a good indication of the costs involved in starting from scratch.

I’ve just had a new kitchen priced up by B and Q. Cabinets, worktops etc were £1700. Fitting £3500.

That’s without any new appliances, but I assume Dad would be happy to keep his existing appliances? If so, cost might be comparable. A builder could possibly do the work more cheaply.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
