Add a downstairs WC if possible.

Hello.

My FIL has been diagnosed with Parkinson's a few months back and has other ailments and is struggling with the stairs so has been using the sink as toilet for number 1's. He also has a son live with him who has mobility issues due to a stroke four years ago.

His Parkinson's health professional adviced that he gets a downstairs toilet and or stair lift and the stair lift was big no.

The easiest option would be an extension at the back of the house if you knock down the conservatory as you could use the kitchen as a toilet/utility room and keep the dining room as is but he doesn't have 10's of thousands for that idea.

I have put up a rough sketch and not to scale so could anybody give me any advice of if it's possible to do this and what options I could use.

Thanks.

My mobile says I can't add images so I may have to get to a computer.

Could you make the Dining Room into a kitchen/diner first and the kitchen into a shower/toilet/utility?

How big is the area under the stairs?  Where is the soil stack for upstairs, and do you know where the underground drainage runs?

ic's question is pertinent. Figuring out where it would be easy to connect to the soil stack is a great starting point.

Deciding how big the toilet needs to be is also vital. I added a toilet downstairs at home and did so in a very small space, but it wouldn't be possible to use that toilet if you were in a wheelchair or if you needed someone else to be with you.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

Where is the conservatory. If its near the kitchen you could connect into the kitchen drains or the bathroom drains. You could get a bathroom installed in part of the conservatory. If possible I would get a shower as well. My father in law couldn’t get upstairs to wash when he got older and a downstairs shower would have made all the difference.

Even these other options will not be that cheap. Do you/him have a budget in mind?
Maybe when he sees the potential cost ( and hassle), then a stairlift might start to look a more attractive option.

A neighbour of his who's house is the same layout(semi's) made the kitchen into a utility room and knocked through the lounge into the dining room and then a single storey extension was the kitchen.

At back of FIL house is a conservatory where the patio doors are so as I said in 1st post hasn't the money to do that.

    Not big at all .

At the moment it is a larder that is sloped from under the stairs that are a quarter turn case so 6ft high that goes down to maybe 4 and half feet high.

Drains are from SVP(on drawing) going to just past the kitchen door into manhole and then along back of house going past dining room to next door.

Conservatory is where the patio door is and is a uPVC dwarf wall construction so I don't think a WC would go there.

He has about £12000 only because he cashed in an ISA that matured last month.

Stair lift is a definite NO.
