Any suggestions for an alternative cash PAYG provider?  Looks like Tesco mobile who I am currently with are changing their PAYG package to monthly chargable contract.

  • How much data, how many calls/texts would you typically use in a month?

Might make a difference to the choices out there.

Look at Giffgaff if you want to use O2's coverage, but compare the standard call and data rates compared with Tesco's.

You don't need to take a 'bundle' you can still use PAYG, though rates have changad, see here.
    Here's a £1 a month, unlimited mins/texts.

That Sky deal is a good one, only 1GB/mth data tho' and it's a PAYM contract, not PAYG.

No Data, just a few calls and texts £10 usually lasts for a couple of months at least.

Wow that is some increase in call costs!

However that is an Internet sign-up, not a nice simple (annonymous) over the counter cash payment like original Tesco PAYG was.
  • Don't know if it is relevent but I am only using an old 2G mobile phone.

It is relevant, can't use Three (or their MVNOs) since never supported 2G.

Trying to think if it's possible to just buy an activated PAYG SIM OTC but I'm struggling. Easy enough to buy an (eg) Asda Mobile SIM in, er, Asda but think it needs to be activated online. Lebara maybe?

You can still get the "classic" O2 PAYG SIMs on eBay. I'm not sure if they exist in physical stores.

They are not available in store. Available on eBay for as little as 20p (in my case I got a second one "free"), including free postage!

They need to be activated by topping up with £10, not certain but think this needs an online account (at least initially). That's how I fired up my two but I had an account in any case to manage an existing PAYM.
