My Octopus fixed tariff ends in December but the July tariff seems to be higher than my current tariff which is:
    Electricity 22.73p/kwh | SC 37.65/day
    Gas  28.52p/unit | SC 28.52/day

I am thinking whether I should switch now to pay 5 months extra and lock in this new fixed tariff
My Dec electric is 23.23p unit but SC 53.94p day.

You need to crunch the numbers using MSE energy club comparison to get an accurate reading of your last year`s usage.
I added up my usage for the last year and put a bit extra on and I more or less break even by switching to the new July tariff.
@Northernstar007 pointed out, if a better deal comes along, as there`s no exit fees. you can switch again any time.

On the flip side, I spotted it this morning, realised it shaved a fraction of a penny off both unit rates and SC from my earlier 15m fix for our gas that runs until December, remembered that had no exit fees (and neither does the July one) and emailed them to switch. That was at mid-day. Got a reply back before 2.30pm confirming that it was all done for us. Can't argue with that!

(Eastern region - previous fix was the 15m August 2024 V1)
I`m in the same boat as you were.
    I`m fixed until Dec 9th on the15m August 2024 V1 tariff.
I`m keen to get another fix before the cap goes higher on 1st Oct.
The new July tariff would be about the same as I pay now so I don`t know whether to fix now or wait for more fixes to come out from Octopus for Aug/Sept.
    Opinions welcome.
Agree with NorthernStar - mine was just fractions of a penny cheaper but means my prices are locked in right through the winter rather than only until December. Because there are no exit fees, if fix prices drop, then I'll just move again. There is literally nothing to lose by making the move!

I'm being offered slightly lower rate price to fix gas today. Still more than my may fix though. Starting to regret not taking the loyalty electric fix.

I would rather pay very slightly more for better customer service with Octopus. Also, they are 100% renewable energy which EDF are not.
Everyone supplies exactly the same mix of renewable, fossil fuel, etc energy. For example right as I type this the grid is 38% renewable.

Look at it this way, if you join Octopus they don't spin up another windmill to increase the percentage of renewable, nor do they shut one down if you leave.

The only way to get anything different is to generate your own.

Yes but the certificates bought lead to real increases in renewables year on year. Those that favour selling gas generated are making global warming worse

    That's a matter of opinion.
REGOs are so cheap that I don't think selling them makes a real difference to energy producer's exonomics. Current trading is around £4/MWh, 0.4p/kWh.

Sure, but they are needed for the millions of customers who choose to pay the bit extra to get renewables. Without them there is no demand and it’s the demand that increases generation (I appreciate there is an argument it would happen anyway but this does increase it )

There shouldn’t be a premium for “getting renewables” since the power that comes into to your premise is by its nature is a mix, of gas, nuclear, wind, solar, stored hydro and of course the ultra renewable carbon neutral  wood burning(sic).
