Want to find "Reborn" - life like dolls

I found it all a bit wierd and disturbing but... what harm are the women doing?
Then i took a look at some of the links on this thread.....pre-term babies wired up like in SCBU, not THAT is really quite sick.....0 -
It wouldn't be my cup of tea, as I like collectable dolls, but not this sort.
But, are these women any different from some people who keep dogs in a way that suggests they see them as their "babies"?
Outfits, designer beds, toys - on it goes.
Then, if they die, it's tears, funeral services, ashes in boxes and bereavement counselling - in fact, acting as though the animal was their child.
I think grief/seperation often has strange effects on people, and these people obviously feel comforted by these dolls, and they are harming no-one.

Weve got a dog ( it was OHs, I was never overkeen on pets) but the thing is with dogs and cats - you get a lot back. They come and snuggle you, kiss you, they jump up with excitement when you come home, and welcome yopu back. If I have an argument or raised voice with OH, dog cowers in the corner and hides her ears. Animals, although clearly not human! Do give a lot back in terms of affection- having pets is a symbiotic relationship. With my dog I feed her, walk her, make sure she goes to the loo, get her medical attention, wash her and clean her teeth. We of course provide emotional care for her, cos we love her, she loves us right back
Having one of these dolls isnt a relationship as its an inanimate object. No matter how much time you put in to groom it, keep it clean, etc it will never look at you with love and gratitude in the way that a pet will. It will never come to you in distress wanting for you to care for it in the way that a child or a pet will.
In terms of the "who are they harming, its not our business" I personally think it IS our business, anyone who is harbouring serious emotional health needs in the UK I believe should be supported and we as citizens have a ethical and moral duty to support them - even if it is challenging- rather than collude with them.
I do wonder, has this phenomenon arisen due to the opportunity to buy them OR has the dolls been on the market in a response to demand? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
When I was a child, I loved dolls. They served a purpose giving me something to love and interact with - I was probably 7yrs old.
I have worked extensively with people with mental health issues and there are not many things that I baulk at but I have not been able to watch very much of this programme at all (for those of you who missed it and might want to watch it is available on Ch4 on demand). Oh dear, those people have got real and serious "issues". Perhaps it isn't hurting anyone, but it really isn't healthy.
Probably the scariest thing I've seen in a long time.Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!0 -

I disagree - people have the right to fulfill their emotional needs as they choose - I've kept animals, but who am I to tell them that a slobbering dog will meet their needs better than a doll?
Who says they want support?
If a doll can give comfort - then that's their business, not ours.
LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
To be honest, most of us all go a bit batty at some point in our life. I did and just played computer games constantly so that i did not have to think about a horrendous situation that had happened to me .When the time was right i stopped and faced it and got through it.
I think these ladies obviously have some underlying problems(one more obvious(older lady) than the other ladies).I say let them do what they like. They are hurting no one and its getting them through life at the moment. They both seemed to have a good person with them for support which hopefully will be there when they may face what is really troubling them (maybe intense grief at the loss of granchild moving away and maybe ocd or unable to have a child, who knows?)
I wish both ladies all the best & i would buy one of these dolls for my child as some are just georgeous but i would draw the line at the doll with tubes coming out of her nose as personally i did find that one a bit disturbing .0 -
They all seemed to have some gaping chasm in their emotional state.
Why not take the money and get involved in a charity instead? NSPCC or volunteer at your local hospital? May be a little more satisfying than buying a doll.
Not what you want to hear I'm sure.0 -
