RBS / NatWest issued a card (was it just a cheque guarantee card?) which had a thumbnail-sized b&w head'n'shoulders photo on the rear. Doubt if it stopped much cheque fraud, the photo was pretty hard to see.

National & Provincial Building Society did a credit card back in the 1990s where you could add your photo on i believe

The bricks and mortar bank premises where the ceased practises actually took place .
^^^^^^ This!   :D:D   There used to be 6 different branch banks within walking distance of where I live - today there are none.  A couple of years ago we didn't even have a Post Office for a while until they found new premises.

One of the banks (TSB) used to send a rep to my children's primary school on Monday mornings so the kids could hand over their cash and have it written up in their passbook.  It taught them the fundamentals of saving small amounts regularly.
In France and other European countries bank branches are every where as people as its a much more cash based society

Yes - I was a primary school teacher in the 80s and I ran the school bank, courtesy of the TSB. It was very successful and the children loved saving their money.

I used to have the RBS photocards. I believe they stopped them because they actually increased fraud: People would see a small photo and assume it must be genuine, whereas a signature was more likely to be examined.

When I did a week's work experience from grammar school in a NatWest the branch had a cheque printing machine. There was a metal plate for each account. You got a a pre-printed branch chequebook from a locked cupboard and filled in a register to say which name you were going to print on it, loaded the machine with the plate, and manually printed the account number and holder's name on each individual cheque. The machine was supposed to turn the pages of the chequebook itself but this was hit and miss so it was better to do it manually so no cheques got missed.
