Actually speaking to a manager? A real manager. I've had an experience of that where they look you in the eye before approving a loan on the spot.

Either way travelling in bad weather trying not to damage cheques, fumbling around with money and bank books, queuing etc was a total nightmare and I scoff everytime I pass a bank. Yes, handy for depositing cash but that's about it. Banks are needed but as long as we have apps and ATMs I'm happy to forget about the 'good ol' days'.

New style banking is not perfect or always smooth but it definitely makes for an easier life.

I think people under 30 have no idea how grateful they should be for online banking.

The manager at Midland bank giving me a ‘bollocking’ for frittering away my student grant and asking for an overdraft. (We used to get paid for going to college in those days)!

You used to be able to get decent sized cash advances on a credit card at a bank branch

Back in the 80s I worked for a small company which had records going back decades, and I found a cheque book with a re-order form giving the option of having it "sent by bearer."

You just don't get that level of service nowadays

I always seem to think of Yorkshire Bank/ Clydsdale Bank as being one of the more old fashioned banks before all the changes, their branches always seemed really dated

I remember the manager of AIB in Leicester telling me I was on the verge of financial ruin because I had exceeded my overdraft. I’m so pleased we’ve moved on from that patriarchal nonsense.

    Travellers cheques.

Having to pre order in branch, then attend branch with your passport to sign each one in front of the teller.  Then on return going back to branch, signing them to pay back into the account.

HSBC still use paying in slips and have statements from the Midlands era.

having to spend your entire Friday lunch time queueing in the branch to cash a cheque to get money for the weekend, then blowing it all on Friday night and not having any money for the taxi home so having to walk....

Tell that to young folks today.....
I'm pretty sure certain that is very much a thing today!

Nowadays I would just be able to pay the taxi driver by debit card, or go to a cashpoint to withdraw more money. Neither was an option in the 1980;s

Another practice that's ceased: only employing males in senior roles!

I can't remember the exact timings but I'd often do my shopping a few days before I got paid and pay by cheque as it wouldn't be debited until my pay had gone in. Looking back I should have more sensible with money but at the time tuat seemed very useful.
Me too.  I used to be paid 4 weekly on a Tuesday so knew if I went shopping on Thursday or Friday before pay day the cheque wouldn't bounce.  If I needed cash I could cash a cheque for £100 at the post office for a £5 fee.
