Bank practices or branch practices that have ceased....

I'm happy to forget about them too, I haven't been to a bank branch for 25 years. A trivial 30 second task like sending some money to your son at university used to take over a week with all the hassle of having to go to the post box and/or bank.M25 said:ChirpyChicken said:Bank practices or branch practices that have ceased....Banks are needed but as long as we have apps and ATMs I'm happy to forget about the 'good ol' days'
I remember keeping my debt card receipts and writing everything down each evening, calculating what I had left in my account , having to remember how much I had when I went out and then having to check through a whole month of transactions when I got my statement. It seems an absolute nightmare now you just check the app esch time you spend.3 -
having to spend your entire Friday lunch time queueing in the branch to cash a cheque to get money for the weekend, then blowing it all on Friday night and not having any money for the taxi home so having to walk....
Tell that to young folks today.....1 -
I'm pretty sure certain that is very much a thing today!p00hsticks said:having to spend your entire Friday lunch time queueing in the branch to cash a cheque to get money for the weekend, then blowing it all on Friday night and not having any money for the taxi home so having to walk....

As a 90's boy, not a lot to add, but this thread has made me reminisce about the times I would pay my pocket money in using my little Nationwide book, watch the lovely lady stamp it for me, hand it back and see my balance had increased. It made me giddy as a young lad. Oh the days of being financially sensible! It's only took two decades to start to get back to that...Debt @ LBM 01/11/24 - £14,161.59Debt current - £10,845.80

I can't remember the exact timings but I'd often do my shopping a few days before I got paid and pay by cheque as it wouldn't be debited until my pay had gone in. Looking back I should have more sensible with money but at the time tuat seemed very useful.0

Oh I remember that arrange with Lloydsflaneurs_lobster said:Staff wearing business attire rather than gym wear.
Teller checking your overnight balance on microfiche.
Having an "arrangement" at a second branch to allow cheque cashing.

The first two do still exist!7sefton said:Paying in slips
Pens on chains
Banking halls that looked like Fort Knox with full glass screens and security drawers, rather than open plan hotel-style lobbies
The third sadly doesn't any more, but as a child I always pictured banking halls to be a bit like the one in Mary Poppins...they don't make them like they used to.

Having all your cashed cheques returned to you. (Bank of Scotland) - (still unsure why they did this).4

Branch opening hours: Monday - Friday, 10.00am - 3.00pm.

Am probably showing my age here:
Cashiers having a dated branch stamp and an ink pad to ink it every time it was used (none of these ‘automatic inking’ stamps).
‘Backing a cheque’ – where the payee signed it on the back and gave it to someone else - in effect transferring the cheque to someone else to pay into their own account – usually after being given cash for the amount of the cheque.
Lots of old dark wood in branches.
Hand typed statements.
Bounced cheques stamped in red ‘Refer to Drawer – Please Re-present’ or finally ‘Refer to Drawer’.
Hand written entries in my deposit account passbook

I walked into my NatWest branch first thing in the morning not so long ago and one of the regular staff said “Good Morning Mr……….” I was pleasantly surprisd as I was only using the change counting machine! 😊Brie said:Staff greeting you by your name when you walk in rather than when you put your card in the reader.
And staff asking if everything is alright when they see you juggling money to pay bills.3
