I remember that Natwest and Midland have cash machines where the cover would retract after you put your card in.

What I do remember about Lloyds is that the older machines you had to insert your card upside down (ie with magnetic strip up!)

My dad had one of the first 'cashpoint' cards.

I'm not sure it had a PIN - you put it into the slot at the machine, and it dispensed £10 - IF you were lucky! It didn't give the card back, that would be posted to you, arriving a couple of days later (yes, we had a reliable postal service in those days).

If you weren't lucky, and the machine had run out of cash, your card would be swallowed, you'd get no cash, and the card would be posted back to you. Meanwhile, if you needed cash, you'd have to go and queue at the bank during your lunch hour. No chance of getting cash out anywhere else, and if the bank had closed for the weekend you'd have to wait until Monday to go to the bank.

Were they the cards that were originally issued to customers without them having applied for them (or indeed even heard of them)? They just arrived in the post unbidden. Desperate attempt to catch up with Barclaycard that had launched some time before as the first "mass-market" credit card.

If I remember correctly, I applied for an Access card so my wife and I could buy a washing machine for our first home… very long time ago now!

And the days of credit card invitations through the post ! From the likes of barclaycard
Limits were proportionally much bigger back then with the likes of gold cards
They were seen as the "in" thing
    Gold Barclaycard. Gold next card

Freebies from your bank, cheque book covers, card wallets and NatWest gave out statement files for a while.

Cheque book covers! How I used to love collecting them! I still have several covers and cheque books from different banks. One of the earliest I have is from the Bank of Ireland, Leicester, in 1978 when I started my first job. I have cheque books and some covers from the original TSB, Lloyds-TSB, Secure Trust Bank, Triodos, Metro Bank, Co-operative Bank, Clydesdale, Nationwide, Santander, Smile, Citibank, Norwich and Peterborough, Nationwide, NatWest, Fist Direct, Cahoot, Child & Co and Drummonds. I also have kept debit cards from many banks. I occasionally spend a good few minutes perusing my collection. The cheque stubs are especially interesting as they remind me of times long ago and where I spent my money.
